The ambitious Agnipath scheme, introduced in June 2022, is now entering a critical phase as the first batch of over 18,300 Agniveers recruited into the armed forces is set to retire by December 31, 2026, after completing four years of service. Around November 15, the Navy, Air Force, and Army will initiate the process of releasing approximately 75 percent of the first batch in a phased manner.
Securing Futures After Military Service
A major question arises regarding the future of these young individuals after spending four years contributing to the nation's borders and military forces. However, these retiring youths do not need to worry. The central government and various state administrations have implemented specific policies and reservations to help these disciplined and trained personnel adjust to civilian life and open pathways to permanent government employment.
Fifty Percent Reservation in CAPF and Assam Rifles
The central government has taken a major relief measure for retiring former Agniveers through recruitments in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles. A direct quota of 50 percent reservation has been established for former Agniveers in direct recruitment for Constable General Duty and Rifleman posts. Furthermore, they will receive complete exemptions from written examinations, physical standard tests, and physical efficiency tests, directly leveraging the training they received in the military.
State Police and Other Government Departments
Not only central forces, but states and union territories have also prepared to welcome Agniveers. The Chandigarh administration has approved a 20 percent horizontal reservation for former Agniveers in Chandigarh Police constable recruitment, jail department jail warder roles, fire services, and the forest department. Additionally, several prominent states across the country have fixed quotas ranging from 10 percent to 20 percent in state police recruitments. Jobs will also be reserved for them in Indian Railways, the Indian Coast Guard, and 16 Defense Public Sector Undertakings.
Four Years of Experience and Sevanidhi Package
Upon completing four years of service, departing Agniveers will possess not only discipline but also financial stability. At retirement, they will receive a lump sum Sevanidhi package amounting to roughly 11.71 lakh rupees plus interest, which will be completely tax-free. Youths can use this financial support for higher education, starting their own businesses, or learning professional skills.
Opportunities in the Corporate Sector
For former Agniveers who prefer not to pursue government jobs, rewarding career paths exist within the corporate sector as well. Major corporate houses, the aviation sector, and private security agencies have announced plans to prioritize former Agniveers shaped by military discipline for supervisory and management roles. Upon discharge, every Agniveer will receive a skill certificate, authenticating their qualifications for both domestic and international companies.
