The Supreme Court has taken serious note of petitions concerning an alleged scuffle with a woman journalist during an opposition foot march, as well as related pleas demanding contempt action. Notices have been formally issued by the top court to the central government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and other concerned parties, seeking their formal replies on the matter.
Disruption and Sloganeering During October 12 Protest March
The controversy stems from an agitation held on October 12, when leaders from the opposition INDIA alliance organised a foot march over allegations of vote theft. Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Akhilesh Yadav, alongside several other political figures, marched directly towards the Supreme Court. The alleged manhandling of a female journalist took place during the media coverage of this demonstration, leading to widespread outrage and subsequent legal challenges.
Contempt Petitions Scheduled for Hearing on November 23
Following the chaos, sloganeering, and reported misconduct during the march up to the court premises, multiple petitions were submitted requesting contempt proceedings against those involved. The petitioners contended that the actions during the gathering breached established norms and warranted judicial scrutiny. Taking cognizance of these submissions, the Supreme Court has set November 23 as the date to take up the matter for further hearing once all parties submit their responses.
