Political intensity has reached a fever pitch for the upcoming by-election on the Bankipur assembly seat in Bihar, scheduled for July 30. The constituency became vacant following the resignation of Nitin Navin from the Bharatiya Janata Party. With the nomination window closing, the electoral battle for this perceived stronghold has intensified significantly. Prashant Kishor filed his nomination representing the Jansuraaj Party, while the Bharatiya Janata Party officially entered the fray with Neeraj Kumar Sinha as their candidate. Historically, winning the Bankipur seat was considered a mere formality for the BJP, but the change in candidates and the active entry of Prashant Kishor have transformed the dynamic, making this a highly competitive race.
Prashant Kishor: No seat is anyone's inheritance
Speaking to the media after filing his papers, Prashant Kishor asserted that no electoral constituency belongs to anyone as a legacy. He emphasized that the final verdict rests with the public, who will determine the winner. He further claimed that the voters of Bankipur have mentally prepared themselves to shatter the arrogance of the Bharatiya Janata Party in this election.
Neeraj Sinha displays strength with a roadshow
On the opposing side, BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha staged a massive roadshow before filing his nomination to demonstrate his political reach and support base. The event saw the presence of key political figures, including Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, Deputy CM Vijay Sinha, State BJP President Sanjay Sarawagi, and Ravi Shankar Prasad, alongside leaders from allied parties. Reflecting on his nomination, Neeraj Kumar Sinha expressed gratitude to the party for trusting a grassroots worker, promising to honor this trust by performing his duties with complete dedication.
Final day chaos and political theater
The final day of the nomination process turned into a theater of political drama when Veena Manvi, the candidate for Tej Pratap Yadav's Janshakti Janata Dal, arrived to file her papers. Immediately after she exited the office, police arrested her in connection with an old fraud case. Officials stated that a non-bailable warrant had been issued against her. While party supporters protested during the arrest, police proceeded to take her into custody, marking a major highlight of the day's events.
Tej Pratap reacts to Veena Manvi's arrest
Veena Manvi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of being terrified of her growing popularity, claiming she was arrested without any valid justification. Although she was subsequently presented in court and granted bail, the incident triggered a sharp reaction from Tej Pratap Yadav. He questioned the timing of the arrest, noting that his candidate had been actively campaigning for several days. Tej Pratap alleged that arresting a candidate immediately after filing nomination papers is a clear conspiracy orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Electoral legacy of Bankipur
Bankipur is widely recognized as one of the safest seats for the BJP in Bihar, having been under their control consistently since 1995. Naveen Prasad Kishor Sinha secured three consecutive victories from 1995 to 2005. Following his tenure, Nitin Navin won four consecutive elections. The seat became open only after Nitin Navin stepped down. Interestingly, the BJP had to change its strategy, replacing Abhishek Bunty with 32-year-old Neeraj Kumar Sinha. At the time the ticket was announced, Sinha was reportedly distributing voter slips at a local booth, marking a swift transition into the electoral race.
