However, the political exchange quickly intensified as Akhilesh Yadav launched a swift counter-attack, raising questions over the government's decision to lease out a landmark public infrastructure project in the state capital.
Financial Assistance and Support for State Startups
At the event, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath officially rolled out financial support under the Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy to empower emerging entrepreneurs. The state government disbursed financial assistance exceeding 5 crore rupees to a total of 107 startups and 9 registered incubators. Addressing the gathering of young innovators, the Chief Minister emphasized that his administration has operated at full capacity to generate sustainable livelihoods. He noted that over 9 lakh government jobs have been provided through fair recruitment processes, while millions of additional employment opportunities were created across the private sector. He affirmed that the state treasury remains open to fostering thousands of young enterprises across Uttar Pradesh.
Contrast with Pre-2017 Perception and State Image
The Chief Minister drew a sharp contrast between the current industrial growth and the state's public perception prior to 2017. He asserted that previous regimes completely ignored discussions on youth employment and economic development, leaving Uttar Pradesh with a severely damaged reputation nationwide. Drawing from his long tenure as a Member of Parliament, the Chief Minister recalled, "Whenever I traveled outside Uttar Pradesh, people looked at the state with eyes of suspicion." He added that the state was routinely identified by dilapidated, pothole-ridden roads and unlit borders where darkness set in immediately after sunset, marking the entry into Uttar Pradesh.
Impact of Past Lawlessness and Recurrent Curfews
Elaborating on the social conditions of earlier years, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath noted that major festivals and public celebrations were frequently preceded by outbreaks of civil unrest and riots. Consequently, educational institutions, colleges, and commercial markets remained shut for months, forcing ordinary citizens to live under the shadow of restrictive curfews. Under such chaotic conditions, discussing technological innovation, business incubators, advanced education, or modern employment avenues was virtually unthinkable. He maintained that the governance model has now transformed, allowing the youth of Uttar Pradesh to establish a distinct global footprint in technology and business.
Akhilesh Yadav Counters Over JPNIC Privatization
Following the Chief Minister's remarks, Akhilesh Yadav responded by raising the controversy surrounding the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) in Lucknow. Rather than addressing the specific historical allegations, he focused on the Yogi government's plan to grant a 30-year lease of the JPNIC complex to a private entity. The flagship project was developed during Akhilesh Yadav's tenure as Chief Minister, prompting strong opposition to the leasing agreement. Criticizing the move, Akhilesh Yadav stated, "At its founding, the BJP used Jayaprakash Narayan's photo, and today the building named after him is being sold." He further alleged that given unchecked authority, the current administration would proceed to privatize major national assets.
