A sharp political confrontation erupted in New Delhi between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition INDIA bloc over the integrity of the electoral process. Led by the Congress party, opposition members gathered at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence to stage a mock parliament featuring a symbolic impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Countering the demonstration, the BJP swiftly convened a press conference to dismiss the accusations and level allegations regarding historic political maneuvers.
Sambit Patra Challenges Opposition Conduct and Invokes History
Addressing reporters, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra characterized the opposition gathering as a mockery of democratic institutions. He remarked that inside the actual Parliament, opposition leaders often resort to sleeping, winking, and preventing legislative business from functioning smoothly. Directly countering Kharge's assertions regarding electoral malpractice, Patra argued that the nation's earliest instance of voter manipulation took place under its first prime minister.
Targeting the Congress party's track record, Patra stated,
"Pandit Nehru became prime minister by stealing votes."He further alleged that votes rightfully belonging to Sardar Patel were diverted to elevate Nehru to power. Addressing the opposition's claim that 130 million voters had their names deleted from voter registries across the country, Patra challenged the assertion by noting that if such a staggering number of citizens had been disenfranchised, all 130 million individuals would have taken to the streets in protest.
Kharge Mounts Critique Against Election Commission at Mock Parliament
At the symbolic public impeachment event, the Congress-led coalition tabled a motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Mallikarjun Kharge maintained that the opposition harbored no personal enmity toward Kumar himself, but insisted that the demonstration was aimed at demanding absolute autonomy and fairness from the election authority. Kharge alleged that the ruling administration had devised a conspiracy to safeguard its political control by influencing the conduct of elections.
Dispute Over the 2023 Appointment Act and Voter Rolls
Kharge pointed to the 2023 legislation governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and fellow Election Commissioners, asserting that the measure had been forcefully enacted through Parliament. According to Kharge, this regulatory framework created the conditions that enabled alleged vote theft by election authorities. He claimed that the official SIR process for updating electoral rolls was initiated only after alleged discrepancies in voter lists were brought to light.
The Congress chief underlined that the opposition's ongoing campaign is not intended to introduce ineligible names into voter registries, but rather to ensure that legitimate and eligible citizens retain their constitutionally guaranteed voting rights. Emphasizing that public confidence in the electoral system forms the backbone of democracy, Kharge warned that government interference with constitutional watchdogs like the Election Commission weakens public faith, vowing that the opposition will continue fighting to protect the voting franchise.
