Political friction has intensified across Karnataka after Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy made remarks describing Islam as the greatest among all religions. The controversy erupted following a speech delivered during a free mass marriage ceremony organized for the Muslim community on the occasion of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad in Kukanur village of Koppal district. The remarks quickly gained traction, drawing severe condemnation from opposition leaders and various Hindu organizations who are now demanding accountability from the state government.
Remarks Made at a Community Marriage Event
Addressing the gathering at the mass wedding event, Basavaraj Rayareddy stated that Islam is a magnificent religion and asserted that several misunderstandings continue to circulate about it in society. He expressed his willingness to study the Quran and emphasized that people should study different faiths to understand their underlying histories. Sharing a personal aspiration, the minister mentioned his desire to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage, noting that while he has not yet received the opportunity, performing it requires embracing Islam. He maintained that exploring religious texts broadens a person's perspective on humanity.
Describing Islam as Scientific and Humanistic
Expanding on his viewpoint during the address, the minister noted that the Quran is not restricted to a single community and can be read by anyone. He stated that Prophet Muhammad imparted the Quran to the entire world, describing the faith as a scientific religion that teaches human beings how to live properly. He cautioned against religious fanaticism or caste bias, adding that simply visiting a mosque and uttering slogans is not enough, as similar traditions and rituals exist in temples as well. According to him, every major religion incorporates good principles designed to promote human values and coexistence.
Distance from Monasteries and Study of Religions
Basavaraj Rayareddy further remarked that he rarely visits monasteries or religious institutions, preferring a broader intellectual approach. He claimed to have read about multiple belief systems, including Buddhism. Highlighting his travel experiences, he mentioned visiting Israel and other international locations not for leisure, but to conduct serious study. These wide-ranging comments soon went viral across digital platforms, setting off a political storm in the state.
BJP and Hindu Organizations Demand Apology
Following the circulation of the minister's speech, the Bharatiya Janata Party and various Hindu organizations strongly condemned his remarks. Leader of the Opposition R Ashok took to X to post a severe critique, demanding that the minister issue a public apology to other religious communities. He warned that if the minister fails to do so, Chief Minister DK शिवकुमार should demand his resignation. The political pressure mounted swiftly, recalling previous controversies faced by members of the state cabinet.
Minister Clarifies His Stand Amid Growing Controversy
Faced with mounting criticism and calls for his removal, Basavaraj Rayareddy issued a prompt clarification to defend his position. He argued that misinterpretation occurs when someone demeans another faith, but emphasized that praising one religion does not mean degrading others. Speaking to reporters, he asked what was wrong with stating that Islam possesses great values and wonderful ideas. He reiterated that all religions are great, no belief system is inferior, and the media should examine the context of statements rather than stoking unnecessary controversies.
