A major political upheaval has unfolded in Israel as President Isaac Herzog decided to entrust Yashar Party leader Gadi Eisenkot with the responsibility of establishing a new government. This crucial move comes following comprehensive consultations with various political factions within the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. This presidential decision is widely viewed as a major setback for incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been actively striving to maintain his hold on power.
Official Invitation and Timeframe
President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to formally present the government-formation invitation to Gadi Eisenkot during an event at the president's residence on Sunday evening local time. Eisenkot will be granted an initial window of 28 days to successfully build the administration. If circumstances demand, the president holds the authority to extend this deadline by an additional 14 days.
Parliamentary Support Breakdown
According to data released by the president's office, political factions commanding a combined total of 67 lawmakers submitted recommendations backing Gadi Eisenkot. In contrast, groups representing 46 parliamentarians threw their support behind current Prime Minister and Likud party chief Benjamin Netanyahu. Meanwhile, seven lawmakers chose not to recommend either political leader for the mandate.
Consultations Leading to the Decision
Before arriving at this outcome, President Isaac Herzog engaged in intensive dialogues with numerous influential figures across the country's political landscape over the preceding days. This process included direct meetings with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Gadi Eisenkot. Having finalized his assessment, the president formally communicated his decision directly to Eisenkot.
