Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Koel Mallick has resigned from her seat, becoming the latest lawmaker to walk away from the party in a fast-moving wave of exits. Her resignation leaves Mamata Banerjee with just 9 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, marking one of the sharpest declines in the party's upper house strength in recent memory.
Four resignations in four days
The chain of exits began on June 8, 2026, when TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Rai stepped down, seen as the first major jolt for Mamata Banerjee in Delhi. Two days later, on June 10, 2026, TMC MP Sushmita Dev also resigned her Rajya Sabha seat. Sushmita Dev told media that she had quit both her Rajya Sabha membership and her membership of the Trinamool Congress. Around the same time, Rajya Sabha MP Prakash also submitted his resignation. With Koel Mallick's exit on June 11, 2026, four Trinamool Rajya Sabha MPs had quit both their positions and the party within a span of four days.
Claims of a rift inside the party
Alongside these resignations, claims have surfaced that around 20 TMC Lok Sabha MPs have formed a separate faction within the party. There has been no official confirmation from the Trinamool Congress on this claim, but the steady stream of resignations has fuelled speculation about growing internal discord.
What TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee said
Amid the questions swirling around the party, TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee has also reacted to the developments. The party, however, has not yet laid out any detailed public response to the string of resignations.
TMC's current strength in the Rajya Sabha
After four MPs quit within four days, Mamata Banerjee is now left with only 9 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. The development comes at a time when the party is already facing multiple challenges in West Bengal, and its parliamentary strength in Delhi appears to be steadily eroding as well.
