A sudden sit-in by Rahul Gandhi and several fellow party leaders right outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence set off a political storm in Delhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party swiftly branded the move a direct violation of democratic norms and established law, training its guns on Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Sambit Patra's Pointed Question
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said staging a protest and raising one's voice is undeniably every citizen's right in a democracy. "Protesting and raising your voice is certainly the jewel of democracy," he said. But Patra immediately followed that up with a pointed question: where and how should a protest actually be held? He argued that the rules the country runs on cannot be brushed aside under any circumstance, and that this is something a person holding the constitutional post of Leader of the Opposition should understand better than anyone else.
Why Not Jantar Mantar
Patra went on to say that Rahul Gandhi is no ordinary worker but the Leader of the Opposition holding a constitutional post, so he is well aware that Delhi already has designated protest spots such as Jantar Mantar. Despite that, holding a sit-in protest right outside the Prime Minister's residence, without permission and in disregard of the rules, is entirely improper. According to Patra, democracy simply does not work through such arbitrary conduct; no matter how senior the post, everyone is equally bound to follow the rules.
Government's Attempt at Talks Falls Through
As tension mounted at the protest site, the government tried to defuse the situation. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan personally reached the spot to speak with the leaders. Dr. Jitendra Singh directly requested Rahul Gandhi to call off the sit-in. It was a direct government initiative to cool things down, but the outcome of the talks turned out to be the opposite of what was hoped, and the standoff only deepened.
Jitendra Singh's X Post Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Backtracking
After the meeting ended, Dr. Jitendra Singh posted on the social media platform X expressing deep disappointment and sorrow over Rahul Gandhi's conduct. He wrote that the government was ready to discuss every issue on the floor of Parliament and that Rahul Gandhi had appeared to agree to this at first. But within a short while, he backtracked on his own word and began setting fresh conditions. Dr. Jitendra Singh described this as the Leader of the Opposition repeatedly going back on his own stated position, and said such repeated flip-flopping runs directly counter to democratic values and established conventions.
Rahul Gandhi Hits Back, Police Step In
Rahul Gandhi, for his part, also posted on X reiterating his demands and accusing the government of dodging accountability. The war of words between the ruling side and the opposition kept escalating, and the police present at the spot eventually had to step in. Using force, the police detained the leaders sitting at the protest, turning the entire episode into a major flashpoint in the standoff between the government and the opposition.
