Political tensions escalated into physical clashes on the streets of Raipur as workers from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress engaged in a fierce face-off. The confrontation, sparked by parallel protests over national issues, forced law enforcement officials to deploy crowd-control measures, resulting in multiple injuries among the police personnel trying to maintain order.
National Disputes Trigger Local Clashes
The unrest in Chhattisgarh's capital stemmed from two separate political demonstrations. On one side, the Congress party had organised statewide protests across all district headquarters to raise their voice against the alleged NEET paper leak, a move that included burning effigies to register their anger. Conversely, BJP workers were infuriated by a recent demonstration led by Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress figures outside the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi. In retaliation, the BJP planned a massive march to encircle the main Congress office in Raipur. The situation quickly deteriorated when supporters from both factions converged, turning the political rivalry into a street-level confrontation.
Barricades Broken and Tear Gas Fired
The BJP's march to the Congress headquarters was attended by high-profile figures, including Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao, State BJP President Kiran Deo, and several lawmakers. As the crowd swelled, the demonstration grew increasingly aggressive. Enthusiastic political workers soon dismantled the police barricades set up to separate the two groups. To prevent a full-scale riot, the police deployed water cannons against the surging crowd. When the physical pushing and shoving continued, security forces were compelled to fire tear gas shells to disperse the agitators. Meanwhile, Congress members gathered safely inside their building continued to shout slogans against the ruling party.
Sixteen Police Officers Injured
The sudden escalation of violence took a heavy toll on the security personnel stationed at the protest site. At least sixteen police officers sustained injuries while trying to physically separate the clashing political workers. Following the chaotic events, Police Commissioner Sanjeev Shukla visited the local medical facility to check on the wounded officers and coordinate with the attending doctors regarding their treatment. According to the official police account, individuals affiliated with the Congress party hurled stones and glass bottles during the melee, which directly led to the police casualties while they were attempting to restore public order. All injured officers are currently receiving medical care.
Counter-Protests and Accusations
The political drama did not end at the Congress headquarters. Retaliating against the BJP's move, Congress workers launched their own march to gherao the BJP's main operational base in Raipur, known as Ekatma Parisar. Sushil Anand, the head of the Pradesh Congress Committee's communication wing, heavily criticised the BJP's actions, claiming the march was a sudden, unprovoked attack. He insisted that Congress members were protesting peacefully using Gandhian principles when BJP workers allegedly assaulted them with water pouches, footwear, and stones. Anand also accused law enforcement of bias, stating that the police directed their tear gas at the Congress office instead of stopping the aggressive BJP mob. He has since urged the Governor to immediately dismiss the state cabinet ministers who participated in the turbulent protest.
Deputy Chief Minister Condemns Anarchy
Addressing the root cause of the BJP's anger, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao delivered a strong rebuke directed at Rahul Gandhi's recent actions in the national capital. Commenting on the Congress protest outside the Prime Minister's house, Sao accused Gandhi of actively trying to spread anarchy across the nation. The Deputy Chief Minister noted that while every citizen possesses the right to disagree within a democracy, no one has the right to create chaos. He firmly stated that damaging the dignity of the Parliament under the guise of an agitation and acting as if one is above the nation are actions that completely contradict foundational democratic values.
