A wedding ceremony in Punjab's Firozpur district turned into an unexpected crisis when the bride refused to proceed with the traditional marital pheras at the final moment. The incident took place in Titu Khera village, located under the Guruharsahai town area. A wedding procession that had arrived with great celebration from Rajasthan was dealt a severe blow when the bride walked away from the mandap after seeing the groom.
Bride's Refusal and Direct Allegations
Upon arriving at the wedding mandap, the bride openly accused the other side of misrepresentation. She alleged that during the marriage negotiations, she had been shown a photograph of an entirely different man. According to her, the person presented as the groom at the mandap was not the individual depicted in the photograph shown to her earlier. Expressing her firm refusal, the bride stated that she could not marry the person standing before her, pointing out that choosing a life partner was a decision affecting her entire future.
Groom's Family Counterclaims and Middlemen Involvement
On the other hand, the groom and his family members, who belong to Chhattargarh in Rajasthan, denied any wrongdoing. They maintained that the alliance had been fixed with the explicit consent of both families. They noted that ongoing conversations over mobile phones had taken place between the households ever since the match was finalized. The groom's maternal grandfather, Mahendra Singh, explained that the photographs involved in the process had been provided directly by the bride's mother and the intermediary brokers.
Demands for Lakhs of Rupees and Cheating Claims
Mahendra Bajikar, the groom's maternal grandfather from Chhattargarh, expressed deep distress over the situation, asserting that his family had been deceived. He alleged that the bride's mother, the bride herself, and a middleman had stipulated a condition that lakhs of rupees would have to be paid if they approved of the groom. According to him, the bride's mother cited financial hardship and requested lakhs of rupees while urging an early morning wedding. The groom's family suggested waiting two days instead and subsequently arrived for the event, where they were initially received with hospitality and served refreshments before the sudden rejection occurred.
Mahendra Bajikar further claimed that the bride was influenced to threaten consuming poison if the wedding proceeded. He shared that he suffers from an illness and felt humiliated by the public turn of events, expressing concern over facing mockery in his home village. The groom, Gursewak Singh, stated that they had traveled through family contacts and brought lakhs of rupees for the wedding arrangements. Gursewak alleged that the bride's side engaged in fraud with the intent to extract money. He indicated that if no resolution is reached, they will formally pursue a police complaint, while local authorities continue to look into the matter.
