The administration of Lovely Professional University located in Phagwara, Punjab, has suspended regular classes for a duration of ten days starting from September 28 following violent protests erupting on the campus. In addition to the suspension of academic activities, internet services within the university premises and surrounding areas have been shut down to prevent the further spread of rumors and maintain public order.
Strict Action Ordered by Punjab Chief Minister
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken a stern stance on the developments unfolding at the institution. According to the Punjab CMO, the Chief Minister has directed authorities to take strict legal action against all individuals found guilty of involvement in the violence. He specifically instructed DGP Gaurav Yadav to personally visit the site of the incident and assess the ground situation.
Students Leave Campus Following Ten-Day Suspension
Following the announcement that regular classes are suspended for ten days, numerous students of Lovely Professional University have packed their belongings and headed back to their hometowns. A student leaving the campus shared that during the violent ruckus the previous night, the computer science building suffered severe damage and parts of it were set on fire. The student added that while peace has now been restored inside with police deployment covering all areas, the students remained deeply shaken after witnessing hostel intrusions and widespread vandalism.
Traffic Restored on National Highway-44
Authorities have confirmed that traffic on National Highway-44 has been successfully restored and the situation is now under control. The highway had remained blocked by protesting Lovely Professional University students for over fifteen hours. During the protests, violent clashes broke out between students and police personnel, resulting in multiple vehicles being set on fire and several police officers sustaining injuries. The unrest at the university had initially sparked off due to unverified rumors, which the institution later clarified were completely false.
