High tension gripped the Abdalpura area of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday when a demonstration against the removal of a portion of the Shahi Masjid turned violent. A massive gathering assembled at the site to oppose the demolition work, leading to intense stone pelting aimed at law enforcement personnel. In response, police fired multiple rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and regain control of the area.
Demolition Planned for Simhastha Infrastructure
The administrative action was initiated to remove an 11-foot section of the Shahi Masjid as part of road widening and infrastructure development for the upcoming Simhastha festival. Demonstrators had gathered at the location through the night to halt the drive. While discussions took place early in the morning regarding the structural modifications, tensions escalated sharply as the operation commenced under tight surveillance.
Over 2,500 Personnel Deployed as Citywide Alert Issued
Following the unrest, local authorities placed the entire city of Ujjain on high alert to prevent further escalation. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma and other senior administrative officials arrived at the spot to supervise security arrangements. More than 2,500 police personnel and officers have been stationed across sensitive points in the city to maintain public order.
