Security measures have been intensified across Punjab ahead of the August 15 Independence Day celebrations following high-level intelligence alerts. Authorities have placed the entire state on high alert after receiving inputs indicating that pro-Khalistan extremist groups are planning to orchestrate disruptions and launch terror strikes during the national festival. According to intelligence officials, fugitive terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who heads the banned organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), is actively spearheading the conspiracy.
Plotting Symbolic Strikes to Grab Global Attention
An official from the Intelligence Bureau stated that Khalistani outfits have been preparing for a considerable time to execute attacks in multiple regions of Punjab. Investigators believe these radical groups intend to carry out symbolic strikes specifically on August 15 to draw international media coverage and force global attention toward their separatist demands during India's national celebration.
This escalation comes at a time when crackdown efforts by Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies against gangster-terrorist networks have severely crippled these organizations. Being pushed onto the backfoot has triggered deep panic and restlessness among these groups, driving them to attempt violent disruptions in Punjab.
Online Radicalization Campaign and Targeting Prime Minister Modi
Intelligence agencies are maintaining continuous surveillance on the digital and physical operations of Sikhs for Justice and its chief, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Pannun has been actively utilizing social media platforms to incite local youth in Punjab, urging them to hoist Khalistan flags at schools, government buildings, and public places on Independence Day while encouraging anti-government protests.
Alongside physical attack preparations, these groups are aggressively expanding their online propaganda network. Intelligence officers noted a distinct shift in Pannun's strategy: while his previous campaigns primarily focused on promoting general strikes against India, his recent efforts are specifically directed at waging a targeted campaign to defame Prime Minister Narendra Modi internationally.
Crackdowns in Canada and UK Drive Relocation Attempts to Malaysia
The threat comes amid persistent attempts by Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI, to reignite the Khalistan movement within Punjab. However, these radical factions are facing mounting pressure abroad as well. Following strict measures and increased vigilance by law enforcement agencies in Canada and the United Kingdom, Khalistani groups attempted to shift their operational bases to countries like Malaysia and Azerbaijan.
Despite these efforts, Malaysian authorities took a decisive stance against terrorism, detaining members of the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) and deporting them to India in June this year. Furthermore, their attempts to organize international referendums in various foreign nations have hit major roadblocks.
Desperation Among Extremist Groups Keeps Security Forces Vigilant
Security officials warned that increasing desperation among radical groups, compounded by frustration within the ISI, elevates the risk of a major attack attempt. In response, Punjab Police alongside central security agencies have deployed enhanced security grids near border areas, transport hubs, educational institutions, and prominent public gathering spots.
Intelligence teams are continuously monitoring social media channels to neutralize inflammatory content and thwart any potential threats before August 15, ensuring peace and public safety across the state.
