A major infrastructure incident occurred on Thursday in the upscale Kichlu Nagar locality of Ludhiana, Punjab, when a busy stretch of the main road suddenly collapsed. The sinkhole opened up on the key route leading toward DMC Road, measuring approximately 15 to 20 feet in depth and extending around 30 feet in length. The sudden cave-in caused immediate panic among nearby residents and commuters. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities promptly cordoned off the entire stretch using heavy barricades to block vehicle movement and protect passersby.
Sewer Pipeline Ruptures as Road Caves In
The severity of the collapse caused an underground sewerage pipeline running beneath the road to fracture. The broken pipe triggered a powerful flow of water, which quickly began eroding the surrounding soil and raising concerns that the crater could expand further. Recognizing the danger of further land subsidence, municipal officials and local police sealed off the entire perimeter, halting all movement near the affected zone.
Eye-Witness Account of the Initial Collapse
Kamal Singhania, owner of a residential property located directly opposite the collapse site, described how the event unfolded. A tractor-trolley parked outside his residence suddenly had one of its wheels sink into the pavement. Although the driver managed to extract the vehicle and drive away, the road surface began rapidly caving in moments later. Startled by loud crumbling sounds, the family rushed outdoors and immediately alerted the police and the Municipal Corporation.
Precautionary Evacuation and Structural Support
Due to the massive dimensions of the sinkhole and its proximity to the adjacent house, there were immediate fears regarding the structural stability of the building. As a precaution, officials ordered the complete evacuation of the house. Municipal engineering teams were deployed to reinforce the residential structure using RCC support to prevent any potential collapse. Municipal priorities focus first on securing the building and sealing the damaged sewer line before initiating road reconstruction.
Municipal Investigation and 10-Day Repair Timeline
Preliminary assessments by the Municipal Corporation suggest that the cave-in may have been caused by negligence during underground cable or utility trenching by a service provider. An investigation has been ordered to identify the accountable parties and initiate appropriate legal and administrative action. In the meantime, the civic body issued an advisory urging commuters traveling toward DMC Road to use alternative routes. Officials stated that complete repair of the pipeline, backfilling of the crater, and restoration of normal traffic will take approximately 10 days.
Recurrent Failure at the Same Spot Raises Questions
Local residents noted that a similar road collapse had occurred at the exact same spot previously when a brick-laden tractor-trolley passed over it. At that time, the subsidence was smaller in scale, and municipal teams had temporarily filled the hole with soil before repaving the surface. However, due to lack of a permanent structural fix, the ground weakened again, resulting in Thursday's far larger crater. Municipal teams remain stationed at the site to oversee emergency restoration operations.
