Electoral defeats typically bring disappointment and a quiet end to political campaigns, but a remarkable event in Rajasthan's Nagaur district completely redefined the meaning of winning and losing. In a rare display of solidarity, local residents rallied behind a female candidate who lost her bid for the sarpanch post, presenting her with a massive financial contribution of 25 lakh rupees arranged in a ceremonial metal tray to lift her spirits.
The Unique Scene in Bhadora Gram Panchayat
This incident unfolded in the Bhadora Gram Panchayat, which falls under the Mundwa panchayat committee in Nagaur district. Forty-five-year-old Chidi Devi, a resident of Mori village within the panchayat, had contested the election for the position of sarpanch. Although the race was intense and she ultimately fell short of victory, the villagers maintained their unwavering support, emphasizing that her prior community service could not be overshadowed by a mere election outcome.
Background of Chidi Devi and Her Family
Chidi Devi comes from an ordinary farming background and lives with her husband Hemaram Rao, who works as a farmer to sustain the family. Approximately two years ago, Hemaram donated a tractor to the local cow shelter, constructed a public water kiosk, and announced plans to drill a borewell for the village. Impressed by these charitable contributions, the local community collectively decided to field Chidi Devi when the sarpanch seat was reserved for a woman.
A Narrow Defeat by 162 Votes
Residents from 36 communities in Mori village united to campaign for Chidi Devi, hoping she would contribute to local development. In the election, her primary opponent was Girija Sandu, the daughter-in-law of retired police station officer Madhosingh. When the results were tallied, Girija Sandu secured 1317 votes, while Chidi Devi garnered 1155 votes, resulting in a narrow defeat by just 162 votes.
Villagers Pool Together 25 Lakh Rupees
Rather than distancing themselves from the candidate after the loss, villagers convened a meeting where members of 34 communities decided to raise a financial honorarium for Chidi Devi. Wanting to ensure that an ordinary family did not bear the financial burden of the campaign, the residents quickly collected 25 lakh rupees. They then arrived at Chidi Devi's home in a convoy of vehicles accompanied by beating drums and celebratory music.
An Emotional Welcome and Community Gathering
The villagers garlanded Chidi Devi, tied a traditional turban on her head, and handed the tray filled with 25 lakh rupees to her husband Hemaram Rao, creating an emotional atmosphere. During the same gathering, newly elected ward panches Sahdevram Goliya and Jagram Goliya from wards 5 and 6 were also honored with turbans in the presence of people from various communities across the village.
Hemaram Rao's Response and the Broader Message
Overwhelmed by the affection shown by the community, Hemaram Rao expressed gratitude, noting that while there was initial disappointment about not winning the post, the villagers' love and support turned that sorrow into joy and pride. This initiative by the residents of Mori village has been widely regarded as a shining example of social harmony and collective responsibility that transcends traditional electoral politics.
