The city of Jodhpur witnessed a remarkable annual religious tradition during Ganesh Chaturthi as the unique Uchchhishta Ganpati Temple unsealed its sanctum doors for a brief 12-hour period. Devotees began gathering in massive numbers on Ganesh Chaturthi evening right after the conclusion of traditional rituals. As the gates opened, chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya echoed across the complex. Throughout the night and leading into the early morning hours, an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 worshippers thronged the shrine to offer prayers before the gates were closed again until the following year.
Tantric Rituals and Public Welfare Focus
According to temple priests Pandit Kamlesh Dave and Ajay Dave, Uchchhishta Ganpati occupies a highly specialized standing within the Nava Ganpati tradition. The idol features Lord Ganesha seated alongside Goddess Riddhi. Scriptures specify that this particular form of the deity is not meant for daily public viewing. Adhering to these textual directions, temple doors are opened exclusively once a year on Ganesh Chaturthi. During this 12-hour window, special worship incorporating Tantric methods, sacred armor (Kavach), mystical diagrams (Yantra), and chants (Mantra) is conducted to promote social harmony and universal welfare.
A 35-Year-Old Temple Housing a 70-Year-Old Deity
Detailing the background of the shrine, Pandit Kamlesh Dave shared that while the temple construction dates back around 35 years, the consecrated idol itself is estimated to be 60 to 70 years old. The image was originally established at the site by his guru, Shivnarayan Ji. A dedicated book titled 'Uchchhishta Ganpati' has also been published to detail the history and traditions associated with the shrine. Followers hold a firm belief that seeking blessings from this deity brings children, financial wellbeing, and the realization of heartfelt wishes.
Visitors Travel From Across India
The rare pilgrimage opportunity attracted visitors not only from Jodhpur but from distant metropolitan centers like Delhi. Mega, a devotee travelling from Delhi, mentioned that she had heard about the shrine for years and viewed its photographs, but had missed out on visiting due to its strict single-day schedule. Making a dedicated journey to Jodhpur this year for Ganesh Chaturthi, she successfully offered her prayers, describing the spiritual atmosphere and deep public faith as a truly memorable experience.
Gates Resealed Until Next Year
Local resident Hemant, who visited the temple with his family, noted that the limited opening creates intense anticipation among devotees throughout the year. He stated that the arrival of tens of thousands of worshippers within such a narrow timeframe reflects extraordinary devotion to Lord Ganesha. Once the designated 12-hour period concluded in the morning, the shrine gates were sealed shut once more, leaving devotees to await the arrival of the next Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
