Residents across Rajasthan, who have been experiencing a break in monsoonal precipitation accompanied by climbing temperatures over the past few days, are set to receive considerable atmospheric relief. According to the comprehensive meteorological forecast released by the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur under the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon activities across eastern sectors of the desert state are poised for a significant reactivation beginning August 20. The temporary slowdown in rainfall, caused by shifting regional pressure dynamics, is coming to an end. Divisions including Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Bharatpur, and Udaipur are expected to encounter light to moderate precipitation spells. Furthermore, the weather office has issued a distinct yellow alert for heavy rain across the eastern border districts of Dholpur and Karauli, warning of potential localized waterlogging in low-lying tracts and elevated inflow into seasonal rivulets.
Thunderstorm, Lightning, and Wind Warnings Across 19 Districts
In its elaborate regional bulletin, the Meteorological Centre specified that as many as 19 districts in Rajasthan will experience active weather disruptions on August 20. The warning highlights intense lightning strikes, thunderstorm activity, and gusty winds traveling at speeds between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour. Out of these, 15 eastern districts have been placed under a yellow weather alert, covering the state capital Jaipur along with Alwar, Baran, Bharatpur, Bundi, Dausa, Deeg, Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu, Khairthal-Tijara, Kota, Kotputli-Behror, Sawai Madhopur, Sikar, and Tonk. In these areas, afternoon and evening convection could trigger sudden wind squalls and cloud-to-ground lightning, presenting risks to unstable temporary shelters, overhead electric cables, and standing crops.
Concurrently, four districts situated in western Rajasthan (Churu, Didwana-Kuchaman, Hanumangarh, and Sri Ganganagar) have also been flagged for wind gusts ranging from 30 to 40 km/h alongside thunderous shower activity. Weather authorities have urged citizens, outdoor commuters, and agricultural workers to avoid seeking shelter beneath tall isolated trees, open metal structures, or near electric poles during lightning events. Farmers have been further advised to securely shelter their livestock in enclosed structures to minimize potential casualties caused by lightning strikes.
Atmospheric Dynamics: What Is Driving the Weather Shift?
The impending turnaround in regional weather is driven by a complex interaction of multiple synoptic weather features operating across northern and central India. According to the IMD, a well-defined depression previously positioned over northern Jharkhand and adjacent parts of south-western Bihar and south-eastern Uttar Pradesh moved west-northwestward while gradually losing structural intensity. By 11:30 AM on August 19, this system weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area. Meteorologists project that this well-marked low-pressure system will continue its track west-northwestward over the next 24 hours, traversing across south-eastern Uttar Pradesh, northern Chhattisgarh, and north-eastern Madhya Pradesh.
This well-marked low-pressure zone is actively facilitating atmospheric moisture transport into the central plains. An associated monsoonal trough line extends from this low-pressure center across Madhya Pradesh down to southern Gujarat, creating a conduit that channels moisture-laden air masses from the Arabian Sea toward northern India. Simultaneously, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over north-eastern Rajasthan and its immediate neighborhood at an altitude of approximately 3.1 kilometers above mean sea level.
Adding to these factors, the primary monsoon trough continues to pass through Firozpur in Punjab, Karnal in Haryana, and Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, anchoring directly into the center of the low-pressure system before extending to Digha along the West Bengal coastline. The synchronized alignment of these multiple systems is pulling humid air streams simultaneously from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea into Rajasthan's atmosphere. This convergence is promoting rapid localized cloud buildup over eastern Rajasthan, creating ideal environmental conditions for thunderstorms and localized downpours.
Extended Divisional Outlook from August 21 to 24
The Jaipur Meteorological Centre outlines that the rainfall spell commencing on August 20 will persist intermittently throughout the remainder of the week. Between August 20 and 23, several parts of the Bharatpur and Jaipur divisions are projected to receive recurring spells of light to moderate rainfall. On August 21 and 22, rain activity will be observed at scattered places across the Jaipur, Bharatpur, Kota, and Ajmer divisions, bringing noticeable daytime cooling across major urban centers.
Subsequently, rain activities are expected to intensify and expand geographically on August 23 and 24. During these two days, precipitation coverage will widen across the Jaipur, Bharatpur, Kota, and Ajmer divisions while extending firmly into the southern district boundaries of the Udaipur division. Rain across the Mewar and Vagad regions of Udaipur division is expected to replenish local water storage reservoirs and natural catchments. This monsoonal resurgence is viewed as vital for standing Kharif crops (such as bajra, maize, soybean, groundnut, and pulses) which had begun experiencing moisture stress due to the preceding spell of dry heat.
Muted Activity in Western Rajasthan: Dry Conditions to Prevail in Jodhpur and Bikaner
While eastern Rajasthan prepares for refreshed monsoonal activity, the vast desert expanses of western Rajasthan will largely miss out on major downpours. The IMD highlights that monsoon conditions across most parts of the Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions will remain predominantly weak over the next 4 to 5 days. The weather across these arid western regions will stay mostly dry and clear, allowing daytime temperatures to remain slightly elevated.
However, localized atmospheric instability could produce light to moderate rainfall in the northern border districts of the Bikaner division (specifically Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh) as well as parts of the Shekhawati region (comprising Sikar, Jhunjhunu, and Churu) between August 20 and 22. Isolated light showers remain possible in scattered pockets of the Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions between August 21 and 24, though widespread or heavy rainfall is currently ruled out for the western zone.
Sri Ganganagar Peaks at 39.4°C Amid Widespread Humidity
The temporary lull in rainfall led to a sharp buildup of heat and humidity across Rajasthan. On Wednesday, Sri Ganganagar recorded the highest maximum temperature in the entire state at 39.4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, relative humidity levels across various districts hovered between 45 percent and 85 percent, creating oppressive muggy conditions for residents.
Meteorologists affirm that with the resurgence of rain across eastern districts from August 20 onward, maximum temperatures are anticipated to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. This drop in temperature, combined with cooler winds, will offer much-needed relief from the uncomfortable humidity, while giving a timely boost to agricultural activities across eastern Rajasthan.
