A tragic incident has unfolded in the Shahabad area of Baran district, where rescue teams on Sunday recovered the bodies of a grandfather and his grandson after a grueling two-day search operation. The victims had been swept away by the fierce currents of the Repi River while attempting to cross it on a motorcycle. Both individuals were traveling to Galthuni village in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh to celebrate the festival of Rakshabandhan. Ever since the mishap occurred, local villagers, grieving family members, and specialized civil defence personnel had been relentlessly combing the river to locate them. According to available details, Dhara Singh, a resident of Sangwan village, was riding a motorcycle alongside his grandfather Kalla Sahariya towards their destination in Madhya Pradesh.
The Accident While Crossing the Causeway
The accident took place on Friday at around 6:30 PM when the pair attempted to cross the causeway of the Repi River near Hodapura village. At that particular time, the water level and the current in the river were extraordinarily high. Due to the raging water flow, the motorcycle lost its balance, and both riders plunged into the turbulent river along with their vehicle. Upon witnessing the accident, bystanders and local villagers immediately alerted the victim's family and the district administration. As soon as news of the disaster spread, relatives and villagers rushed to the site to initiate an initial search. Shortly afterward, a civil defence team arrived at the location to take charge of the rescue efforts.
Bodies Recovered Trapped Among Rocks
The search operation proved immensely challenging due to the heavy water discharge and the presence of dangerous rocks and hidden obstacles across the riverbed. For two consecutive days, civil defence personnel, supported by courageous villagers and family members, scanned every potential spot along the river. The ferocious velocity of the water forced the rescue workers to proceed with extreme caution throughout the mission. On Sunday afternoon, during a renewed sweep about one kilometer away from the original accident site, searchers spotted the bodies lodged between rocks in the riverbed. Upon this discovery, the rescue team swiftly moved in, retrieved the mortal remains from the water, and brought them ashore. The confirmation of their deaths plunged the grieving family and the entire community into deep sorrow.
Bodies Sent for Post-Mortem Examination
Following the recovery of the bodies from the river, local police officials arrived at the scene to oversee the necessary legal procedures. Both bodies are scheduled to undergo a post-mortem examination, after which they will be formally handed over to the bereaved family members for final rites. The unfortunate tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over Sangwan village and the surrounding region, leaving residents in profound grief.
