The famous Khatu Shyam Ji temple, located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, has temporarily suspended public entry to facilitate a sacred ritual. According to the management schedule, the temple doors remain closed for 19 hours, during which devotees are unable to offer prayers or obtain viewings of the deity. The official announcement regarding this temporary closure was issued in advance by the Shri Shyam Mandir Committee to inform visiting pilgrims.
The Sacred Ritual of Tilak Shringar and Shaligram Form
The temporary closure of the temple is tied to a traditional ritual practiced over many years. Ravi Singh Chauhan, Treasurer of the Shri Shyam Mandir Committee, explained the religious significance behind this custom. According to the temple's long-standing tradition, a special bath is offered to Baba Shyam on the auspicious occasion of Amavasya. During this ritual, the deity's prominent and ornate Tilak Shringar is carefully removed.
Once the old Tilak Shringar is completely removed, Baba Shyam returns to his original and pristine Shaligram form. It is only on specific days within a month that the authorized priests of the temple get the rare privilege of witnessing and worshipping the deity in this core Shaligram form. Following the sacred bath, the priests perform the intricate process of applying a fresh Tilak Shringar, accompanied by traditional Vedic chants and elaborate rituals. Because this holy process requires several hours of precise care, the temple remains closed to the public, with only authorized temple priests permitted inside the sanctum sanctorum during these private proceedings.
Closure Schedule and Advice for Devotees
As per the official schedule released by the temple authorities, the temple gates were closed at 10:00 PM on Wednesday, 16 September, immediately following the Shayan Aarti. The shrine remained closed throughout the day on Thursday, 17 September. After completing the 19-hour-long purification and ornamentation process, the doors are scheduled to reopen for devotees at 5:00 PM on Thursday during the Evening Sandhya Aarti.
The Shri Shyam Mandir Committee has urged pilgrims traveling from distant places to pay close attention to the revised timings and avoid assembling near the temple complex while the doors remain shut, ensuring smooth management and avoiding unnecessary hardship for visitors.
Legend of Barbarik: The Ally of the Helpless
Khatu Shyam Ji is widely revered as 'Haare Ka Sahara' (the support of the defeated) and is worshipped as an avatar of Lord Krishna in the present era of Kaliyuga. According to Hindu mythology and episodes from the Mahabharata, Baba Shyam was originally Barbarik, the grandson of the Pandava warrior Bhima and the son of Ghatotkacha. Before setting out for the Mahabharata war, Barbarik made a solemn vow to his mother that he would fight on the side of whichever party was losing.
Knowing the immense power of Barbarik's divine arrows, Lord Krishna realized that his pledge could alter the course of the war. Disguising himself as a Brahmin, Lord Krishna approached Barbarik and requested his head as charity. Demonstrating unparalleled devotion and selfless sacrifice, Barbarik cut off his own head without hesitation and offered it at the feet of Lord Krishna.
Deeply moved by his devotion, Lord Krishna blessed Barbarik with the boon that he would be worshipped in Kaliyuga under Krishna's own name, 'Shyam'. Furthermore, Krishna granted him the privilege of being the ultimate protector for anyone feeling defeated, helpless, or distressed in life. It is due to this divine promise that millions of devotees turn to Khatu Shyam Ji today as their eternal savior.
