While a significant portion of the population residing in these neighborhoods comprises government employees, stepping out of their homes immediately reveals a landscape dominated by a massive pool of filthy water and thick mud, standing two to three feet deep instead of a proper road. The situation has deteriorated to the point where simply exiting their houses has become a daily struggle for the local inhabitants. Schoolchildren are forced to traverse this exact same treacherous route every single day, frequently slipping into the slush and sustaining injuries. During the monsoon season, these already miserable conditions transform into something far worse. Young students residing in the area have reported that due to the stagnant dirty water and mud, they have frequently been forced to miss their schools and even had to skip crucial examinations. Despite its designation as a prime locality at the district headquarters, Gomti Colony currently displays living conditions that resemble a heavily neglected and backward region.
Overflowing Sewage Forms a Stagnant Pond
The primary catalyst behind this ongoing crisis is the persistent leakage of sewage water from underground lines, which has been spilling onto the streets for several months without interruption. Due to the absolute absence of proper drainage channels to facilitate water run-off, this contaminated water has gradually accumulated into a massive artificial pond. The most alarming aspect of the situation is that even without any rainfall, two to three feet of dirty water remains permanently standing across the colony. When actual rains arrive, the scenario becomes vastly more terrifying. Residents are compelled to navigate directly through this foul-smelling wastewater and thick mud just to reach the safety of their homes. Local citizens point out that the prolonged stagnation of this dirty water has triggered a massive surge in the mosquito population throughout the entire zone. Furthermore, locals report that venomous snakes are frequently spotted slithering through the stagnant pools, elevating the constant threat of a fatal encounter. Children, senior citizens, and other pedestrians have repeatedly slipped and fallen into the treacherous sludge.
Major Hardships and Educational Setbacks for Schoolchildren
When ground reporting was conducted at the location, a school student named Arnav Tiwari voiced his deep frustrations, stating that during rainy spells, the conditions become so severe that attending school is rendered nearly impossible. Even on ordinary days, students are forced to wade through dirty water and mud, which routinely ruins their school uniforms and footwear. Arnav earnestly appealed to the administration to implement a swift and permanent resolution to this ongoing crisis. Another student from the colony, Kanishka, shared her plight, explaining that due to the excessive water accumulation blocking the pathways, she has been forced to miss school on numerous occasions. She noted that while walking through the contaminated water, her footing frequently slips, causing her to fall. The persistent presence of dirty water in the immediate vicinity also keeps the constant fear of venomous snakes looming overhead.
Contaminated Sewage Reaching Residential Doorsteps
Deepak Awasthi, a resident of the colony, elaborated on the severity of the crisis by stating that even in the complete absence of rain, two to three feet of water remains stagnated here. The conditions spiral further downward during the rainy season. He alleged that the toxic sewage water is now actively encroaching upon people's residential properties and entering homes. According to Deepak, the colony lacks even the most basic and adequate drainage networks to carry away the excess water. This predicament has persisted for an extended duration, and despite lodging numerous complaints with the relevant municipal authorities, no permanent remedy has been executed thus far. This particular neighborhood falls under the administrative jurisdiction of ward number seven.
Elderly Residents Trapped Indoors Due to Waterlogging
Sharda Sharma, an elderly resident living in the colony, shared her painful ordeal, stating that foul sewage water constantly remains pooled right outside the entrance of her house. She has been forced to endure this agonizing ordeal for approximately a year. During the rainy season, stepping out of the house becomes practically unimaginable. Sharda Sharma strongly urged the district administration and the municipal council to engineer a permanent solution to the crisis and establish proper infrastructure for roads and drainage within the colony. Local residents reiterating their grievances stated that they have repeatedly brought the matter to the attention of municipal officials and elected public representatives. Despite these persistent appeals, residents allege that no permanent remedial measures have been initiated, leaving the public to suffer indefinitely.
