A severe civic crisis has gripped the Hundawal Road area in the city of Dholpur, Rajasthan, where chronic waterlogging and choked sewer systems have made regular life extraordinarily arduous for local citizens. The blockage of underground sewage pipelines and drainage channels has turned the primary roadway into a pool of stagnant, foul-smelling wastewater. The worst sufferers of this civic collapse are thousands of people residing in the adjacent neighbourhoods of Ward 7, Ward 8, and Ward 9, who have been forced to endure deplorable living conditions for several years. This widespread accumulation of contaminated water severely restricts pedestrians, senior citizens, and young children. School pupils frequently have to wade through filthy water to reach their classrooms, and during peak periods of water accumulation, movement becomes impossible, preventing children from attending school altogether.
Damaged Covers and Unfinished Drains Cause Frequent Mishaps
The sewage pooled across the road is not merely a daily nuisance but has developed into a persistent road safety hazard. Kalyan Singh, a local resident, explained that multiple ferro-cement slabs covering the roadside drain along Hundawal Road have broken and caved in, creating hidden pitfalls under the murky water. He recounted suffering injuries himself after falling into one of these submerged cavities alongside his scooter. For commuters travelling on two-wheelers as well as everyday pedestrians, moving along this stretch has become perilous.
Another local resident, Bunty Baghel, pointed out that civil construction on the main drainage network was left incomplete at multiple locations. With the drainage channels and sewer system fully clogged, dirty wastewater routinely spills out and floods the street. Due to the combination of open, unfinished channels and sunken slabs, motorcycle riders frequently lose balance and crash, while school transport vehicles struggle immensely to navigate through the flooded, sludge-covered passage.
Structural Damage to Houses and Threat of Waterborne Outbreaks
The repercussions of the ongoing water stagnation have now penetrated directly into residential properties. Highlighting the distress of affected households, local resident Rameshwar explained that murky wastewater remains pooled on all sides of his home throughout the year. The situation escalates dramatically during rainfall, when the water level outside his doorway rises up to approximately 4 feet. Because structures have remained submerged in contaminated water continuously for years, building foundations are progressively weakening, leaving families in persistent fear of structural failure and catastrophic cave-ins.
Alongside building degradation, the constant presence of stagnant municipal waste poses a grave health risk, significantly increasing the probability of infectious and vector-borne diseases spreading across the locality. Describing the misery of his household, Rameshwar stated that this ordeal has dragged on unresolved for roughly 4 years, subjecting his entire family to miserable domestic conditions without any meaningful reprieve from municipal authorities.
Growing Public Outcry Over Administrative Negligence
Neighbourhood residents maintain that they have repeatedly submitted grievances regarding the worsening conditions on Hundawal Road to the Municipal Council and the district administration. However, no sustainable or permanent engineering solution has been implemented to clear the bottlenecks. The danger posed by neglected civic infrastructure was underscored recently when a young girl playing nearby fell straight into an exposed drain. Fortunately, family members standing close by reacted swiftly and pulled the child out of the drain immediately, averting a fatal accident.
The affected residents across all three wards have now issued an urgent appeal to the civic administration to resolve the crisis without further delay. They are demanding a comprehensive desilting drive for all blocked sewers and drains, rapid completion of left-behind drainage construction projects, prompt replacement of broken ferro covers, and the establishment of a functional stormwater discharge mechanism to restore safe living conditions to the neighbourhood.
