Udaipur recently witnessed a deeply emotional and distinctive funeral procession that left everyone teary-eyed. While ordinary funeral processions are typically marked by quiet mourning, the final journey of a veteran wrestling master saw his disciples perform traditional arena stunts right ahead of his bier. Holding weapons and carrying the distinct posture of traditional wrestlers, every single feat performed by the disciples was a powerful tribute to their master. This unique ritual represents a long-standing tradition among the wrestlers of Udaipur, where they pay their final respects to their ustad through the very martial arts he taught them throughout his life.
Life and Legacy of Bhagwanlal Sen
This extraordinary farewell was for the renowned mural artist, traditional swordsman, and master wrestler Bhagwanlal Sen, who passed away at the age of 81. A resident of Rao Ji Ka Hata in Hemraj Ji Paneri Ki Gali, Bhagwanlal Sen dedicated a major portion of his life to art and wrestling. The ustad was especially famous for his exceptional swordsmanship performances. Even at an advanced age, whenever he picked up a sword to demonstrate his skills, onlookers deeply admired his craft. He had recently demonstrated his art during Jaljhulni Ekadashi as well. After dropping his elder brother home following the Ramrewari procession, his health suddenly deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization. When his final journey finally began, his disciples decided to bid farewell to their master through the exact art he had practiced and promoted all his life.
More Than Just a Demonstration for Disciples
During the procession, the wrestlers performed traditional arena stunts and weapon handling directly in front of the funeral bier. Every single movement felt like a final reiteration of their master's teachings. The final rites of Bhagwanlal Sen were performed with full traditional rituals at the Ashok Nagar crematorium. Having carved a distinct niche for himself in the worlds of painting, traditional swordsmanship, and wrestling, Ustad Bhagwanlal Sen is no longer physically present among us, but the arena stunts displayed in the hands of his devoted disciples will continue to carry forward his art, his teachings, and his lasting legacy.
