Located in Maharajpur village within Gaurihar tehsil of Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, the Bidehi Baba Temple serves as a major hub of regional religious faith. Popularly known among locals as the Snake Temple (Sarp Mandir), the shrine is renowned for extraordinary claims surrounding snakebite recoveries. According to deeply rooted local beliefs, any individual bitten by a venomous snake who reaches the temple alive returns home completely healed. The sacred site witnesses a massive influx of pilgrims during the festival of Nag Panchami, with visitors traveling long distances to seek blessings.
Historical Origins and the Royal Samadhi
According to temple priest Rajkumar Tiwari, the heritage of this holy site dates back to the era of kings. Historical accounts held by the caretakers state that a monarch arrived in this secluded forest centuries ago to embrace a solitary life of spiritual devotion. Following an extended period of meditation, the ruler took live samadhi at this exact location. Over time, the present temple structure was erected directly over the royal samadhi. Devotees believe that the spiritual aura and divine blessings of the founder remain active at the shrine, offering relief to afflicted visitors.
Traditional Protocol and Rules for Snakebite Patients
The shrine follows a specific customary procedure when handling individuals affected by snakebites. Priest Rajkumar Tiwari explains that immediately after a snakebite occurs, the victim or family members must chant "Baidehi Baba Ki Jai" and tie a firm knot in their hair. Following this initial step, the patient is given a mixture of clarified butter (ghee) and black pepper to drink, while the consumption of water is strictly prohibited.
Without delay, the victim is transported to the Baidehi Baba Temple in Maharajpur. Upon arrival at the temple premises, the patient repeats the sacred chant and performs circumambulation (parikrama) around the shrine. Belief holds that regardless of how toxic the snake venom might be, the patient recovers after completing these steps. During the rainy season, the temple receives 20 to 25 snakebite cases every day. Emergency visits often happen late at night, prompting the priest to rush from his residence to conduct the parikrama and oversee the traditional healing ritual.
Nag Panchami Gatherings and Inter-State Pilgrimage
The annual festival of Nag Panchami holds immense significance for the shrine. On this occasion, thousands to lakhs of devotees arrive in Maharajpur from across Madhya Pradesh as well as neighboring Uttar Pradesh. Devotees form long queues to offer prayers and pay homage. The customary offerings presented to Baidehi Baba primarily include betel leaves (paan), sugar drops (batasha), and fresh coconuts, as worshippers pray for good health, safety, and prosperity.
