A dedicated grassroots initiative in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district has quietly transformed the lives of young sports enthusiasts over the last two and a half decades. Dr. Pratyush Raj, who serves as the secretary of the Gonda Taekwondo Association, has imparted free self-defense and martial arts training to approximately 15,000 children. His mission focuses on instilling self-confidence, discipline, and practical defense skills among young learners, ensuring they possess the resilience needed to protect themselves in challenging circumstances.
Bridging Financial Barriers with Free Training
The journey began when Dr. Pratyush Raj drew inspiration from his own mentor to make sports accessible to everyone. Observing that young athletes from economically disadvantaged households were frequently sidelined due to financial constraints, he chose to launch a completely complimentary coaching program. When he initially arrived in Gonda, awareness regarding taekwondo was virtually non-existent across local schools. People routinely approached him out of curiosity, asking what the discipline of taekwondo actually entailed.
Building Grassroots Awareness and Training Camps
To overcome the lack of familiarity with martial arts, Dr. Pratyush Raj started conducting free instruction sessions across private educational institutions. Alongside training the students, he invested significant effort into educating parents about the physical, mental, and safety benefits of athletic discipline. Beyond routine classes, periodic specialized workshops are held to reach a wider demographic. In a recent training camp alone, around 700 youngsters were equipped with fundamental self-defense techniques designed to handle difficult real-life situations.
From District Tournaments to International Arenas
The sustained coaching effort has yielded remarkable athletic results, with several students progressing through district and state competitions to represent their region on national and international stages. According to Dr. Pratyush Raj, children possess immense raw potential, needing only structured guidance and equitable opportunities to excel. As he approaches the completion of 25 years of service in taekwondo, plans are underway to organize a major celebratory event in December. He reaffirmed his commitment to keeping the training completely free, ensuring that financial limitations never stop talented youth from pursuing sporting excellence.
