A grassroots sporting revolution is taking shape along the waterways of western Uttar Pradesh, far beyond the conventional track and field arenas. In the small village of Tharauli in Saharanpur district, resident Sandeep Choudhary has undertaken an ambitious mission to uncover and nurture local athletic potential. Having faced personal hurdles that kept him from advancing in sports during his own youth, Choudhary resolved that no talented child from his rural community should suffer the same fate due to financial hardship or lack of infrastructure. Driven by this determination, he decided to introduce village youngsters to water sports, investing several lakh rupees from his own pocket to procure a specialized dragon boat and establish a dedicated training ground on local waters.
From Kerala Traditions to Saharanpur Waterways
Dragon boats and related streamlined vessels are most prominently associated with southern India, particularly the famed Vallam Kali boat races held across the backwaters of Kerala. Operating such a vessel effectively demands rigorous coordination and physical stamina, requiring a synchronized crew of 8 to 10 rowers to steer and propel the craft. Historically, water sports have carried a reputation as an expensive pursuit, remaining far out of reach for families residing in agrarian areas. When athletes seek professional instruction at outside academies, the coaching fee typically climbs to around 15,000 rupees per child, and in many specialized centers, even that substantial sum proves insufficient. Recognizing this severe barrier to entry, Choudhary arranged to provide the entire setup completely free of charge to underprivileged children from Tharauli and neighboring hamlets.
Intensive Practice Sessions Along the Manakmau Canal
The practical phase of this initiative marked a historic milestone when the dragon boat was officially lowered into the waters of Saharanpur's large Manakmau canal for the very first time. Under organized coaching sessions, the young participants moved out from Yogi Lake to navigate the canal waters, practicing rigorous endurance maneuvers. Demonstrating remarkable discipline and stamina, the rowing squad paddled approximately three and a half to four kilometers in reverse flow, delivering an impressive display of synchrony and physical endurance. Supported by local gram panchayat efforts, the organizers deliberately waived all training fees this year to ensure that promising rural talents never abandon competitive sports solely over financial limitations.
Preparing Underprivileged Athletes for Upcoming Championships
Speaking about the initiative, Tharauli village pradhan husband Sandeep Choudhary outlined the strategic vision driving this rigorous conditioning camp. The immediate priority centers on preparing these young athletes for the upcoming dragon boat championship, giving them the skills and exposure required to compete on major stages. Choudhary emphasized that parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Saharanpur in particular, have traditionally lagged behind in athletic development, with relatively few parents actively guiding their children toward professional sports. By removing the financial burden and introducing disciplined aquatic training, his goal is to inspire wider community participation, steering local youth toward podium finishes that bring pride to their village, their home district, and the nation.
