A dedicated basketball talent search initiative has been launched in Surguja to empower children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds and rural areas through sports. The core mission of this grassroots drive is to offer a structured platform for talented young boys and girls who lack access to modern sports infrastructure. Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Rajesh Singh shared that during various national level competitions, he observed how children from affluent families consistently secured opportunities due to better resources. In contrast, gifted kids from rural hamlets and slum settlements often struggled to progress despite having immense potential. To bridge this disparity, intensive training is being conducted at Gandhi Stadium to groom these promising athletes for state, national, and international championships.
Strategic Shift Toward Primary School Children Aged 7 to 10
The talent search program has introduced a major operational shift this year to maximize long-term athletic development. Previously, the selection process focused exclusively on older children in the age group of 14 to 15 years. Recognizing that building foundational athletic skills and muscle memory is far more effective at an early stage, the organizers have now shifted their core focus toward primary school students. Under the revised criteria, children aged between 7 and 10 years are being identified from rural and slum neighborhoods. By engaging children at such a tender age, the coaching staff aims to instill fundamental basketball techniques and discipline right from their initial schooling years.
Zero Cost Training with Free Uniforms, Footwear, and Travel Expenses
To ensure that financial hardship never prevents a deserving child from pursuing sports, the entire talent search and coaching program is provided free of charge. According to Rajesh Singh, no training fees are levied on any underprivileged child joining the drive. Furthermore, every enrolled player is provided with essential sports gear, including official basketball dresses and specialized shoes, at zero cost. When these young athletes qualify to participate in outstation tournaments, all travel-related logistics and financial support are fully covered. The entire initiative is funded and operated through collective contributions from veteran sports players and supportive parents who volunteer their resources.
Overcoming Stage Fright and Tournament Pressure Through Friendly Matches
For young players hailing from modest rural and slum environments, stepping into large-scale national competition venues often poses a severe psychological barrier. The intimidating atmosphere of expansive arenas, roaring crowds, and intense competitive pressure can cause initial nervousness among debutants. To eliminate stage fright and build mental resilience, regular exposure matches are organized locally at Gandhi Stadium by inviting external teams. These friendly fixtures allow the children to experience real match conditions and develop competitive confidence. Rajesh Singh noted that if a child trains with discipline and regularity, basic basketball fundamentals can be learned within approximately one month, though true mastery develops through repeated tournament exposure.
