At the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, 31-year-old Indian athlete Sarvesh Kushare scripted history by winning the silver medal in the men's high jump competition. Kushare cleared a height of 2.25 meters in the final event, becoming the first Indian jumper ever to secure a silver medal in high jump at the Commonwealth Games. Although he narrowly missed out on the gold medal, his remarkable effort has added a memorable chapter to the country's track and field legacy.
The Gold Medal Battle and Countback Decision
The high jump final produced an intense battle between Sarvesh Kushare and Jamaica's Romaine Beckford. Both athletes successfully cleared the 2.25-meter mark but subsequently failed to navigate the 2.28-meter height in all three of their respective attempts. With both jumpers tied at 2.25 meters, the winner was determined using the countback rule. Beckford secured the gold medal because he cleared the 2.25-meter bar on his very first attempt, whereas Kushare required three attempts to cross the same barrier. As a result, the Jamaican was awarded gold while Kushare bagged the silver. Meanwhile, Jack Kimani of England cleared 2.20 meters to take home the bronze medal.
Surpassing Previous Commonwealth Milestones
Prior to this achievement in Glasgow, India's best high jump performance at the Commonwealth Games belonged to Tejaswin Shankar, who claimed a bronze medal at the 2022 Birmingham Games. By securing silver, Kushare surpassed that benchmark to become India's most successful high jumper in Commonwealth Games history. India's Adarsh Ram also registered a strong performance in the same event, clearing 2.15 meters to finish fifth. On the other hand, Tejaswin Shankar opted to withdraw from the competition after a failed initial attempt at 2.05 meters. His decision was a precautionary measure, as he is scheduled to compete in the demanding decathlon event starting Thursday.
From Nashik Onion Fields to Global Stardom
Hailing from Devgaon village in Maharashtra's Nashik district, Sarvesh Kushare's path to success was forged through immense hardship. His father, an onion farmer, lacked the resources to provide formal training equipment. To help his son practice during his early years, his father built a makeshift landing pit in their crop fields using dried corn husks, cotton, and agricultural waste. Despite the lack of modern infrastructure, Kushare remained committed to his training, eventually converting those humble beginnings into a historic Commonwealth Games silver medal.
Career Milestones and National Records
Kushare entered the Glasgow games on the back of impressive international performances. Earlier this month, he jumped 2.26 meters at the Monaco Diamond League to finish third, becoming the first Indian high jumper to stand on a Diamond League podium. That accomplishment also placed him alongside Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar, and Vikas Gowda as only the fourth Indian athlete overall to finish in the top three at a Diamond League event. Kushare made his national debut in 2014 and claimed his first national gold medal in 2018. He progressed rapidly over the years, clearing 2.27 meters in 2022 before setting a national record of 2.31 meters at the 2026 National Inter-State Championship. Additionally, he holds the distinction of being the first Indian to reach the men's high jump final at the World Athletics Championships.
