Bareilly Youth Overcomes Poverty to Pass NEET 2026 on Eighth Try After Brother's Tragic Accident

Altaf from Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, cleared NEET 2026 on his eighth attempt with 563 marks. Coming from a family that sells potatoes on the roadside, he funded his own coaching through sheer perseverance.

Financial distress and limited resources could not stop Altaf, a resident of Nawabganj in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, from fulfilling his dream of entering the medical profession. After years of relentless perseverance, he cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2026 on his eighth attempt. Coming from a household that relied on selling potatoes on the roadside to make ends meet, Altaf secured an All India Rank of 27,910 with a total score of 563 marks. Within the OBC category, he attained rank 13,437. His achievement stands as a testament to determination, especially considering that his family once lacked the funds even to send him to Kota for coaching.

Borrowing Notes and Saving Money for Coaching

In the early days of his preparation, financial constraints prevented Altaf from moving to Kota, Rajasthan, which is known for its medical entrance coaching centers. Instead of giving up, he began studying at home using preparation notes borrowed from friends who had returned from Kota. However, as time progressed, he recognized that structured guidance and formal coaching were essential to crack such a competitive examination. To raise funds for his coaching fees, Altaf worked alongside his father selling potatoes at a roadside stall. Through hard work and careful saving, father and son accumulated enough money to finally send Altaf to Kota, giving a fresh momentum to his preparation.

Years of Struggle and Mark-by-Mark Progress

Altaf's path to success was marked by repeated attempts and fluctuating scores. He first sat for the medical entrance examination in 2019, securing 323 marks. Refusing to lose heart, he continued his studies through online lectures and study material borrowed from peers. By 2022, his efforts yielded 516 marks. He made further progress in 2023 and 2024, scoring 590 marks in both attempts. Unfortunately, despite achieving significant improvement, high cutoff marks in those years prevented him from securing a seat in a medical college. In 2025, his score dropped to 501 marks, yet he maintained his focus and persisted until he cleared NEET 2026 on his eighth try.

A Tragic Accident That Fueled the Ambition

After completing his 12th grade, Altaf routinely assisted his father at their potato stall. The decisive moment that solidified his commitment to becoming a doctor occurred when his elder brother met with a severe road accident. His brother used to travel to the Bareilly wholesale market around 2:00 AM every night to purchase potatoes for their stall. The traumatic news of the late-night crash deeply affected Altaf and ignited a fierce resolve within him to pursue medicine at all costs, turning his personal hardship into a driving force for his career.

Overcoming Life in a Two-Room House

Altaf comes from a very humble background with limited educational exposure in the family. His father, Iqbal Hussain, studied only up to the 9th grade, while his mother is illiterate. The large family consists of eight sisters and one elder brother. Up until 2015, all twelve family members resided together in a modest two-room kutcha house. In addition to daily survival expenses, his father bore the heavy financial responsibility of arranging marriages for all eight daughters. Despite these daunting economic challenges, Altaf saved money for his education through sheer hard work and reshaped his destiny in Kota, creating an inspiring benchmark for candidates from resource-constrained backgrounds across the nation.
