The landscape of rural employment and traditional agriculture in India is rapidly changing, with farmers actively seeking out modern, high-yield alternatives. In the Jehanabad district of Bihar, aquaculture has emerged as a highly lucrative source of livelihood, gradually overshadowing conventional crop farming. Many local agriculturalists have come to realize that breeding fish offers significantly higher profit margins compared to traditional fieldwork. Driven by this economic shift, people from various backgrounds are stepping into the aquaculture sector. Leading this wave of modernization is Dev Sharan Prasad, a resident of the Makhdumpur area in Jehanabad, who has set a new benchmark by establishing an entirely high-tech, multi-purpose fish farm on his land.
Inspired by Aquaculture in Andhra Pradesh
The journey behind this advanced farming setup stems from Prasad's past work experiences outside his home state. Before venturing into the business of aquaculture, he was employed in Andhra Pradesh, a region known for its massive seafood industry. It was there that he first witnessed the concept of integrated fish farming in action. Deeply impressed by how multiple agricultural activities could be harmonized to maximize output, he decided to bring the model back home. About three years ago, he took the leap and excavated a large pond on a plot of land spanning approximately one acre and 14 decimals. Today, he is successfully rearing four different species of fish in this water body. His dedication and innovative approach have also earned him a special selection for shrimp farming at the district level, a new expansion he plans to officially launch later this year.
Digital Surveillance in a Desolate Landscape
What truly sets Prasad's operation apart is not just the variety of fish, but the stringent, bank-like security measures he has implemented. His modern agricultural setup is located in a somewhat isolated and desolate area, making it vulnerable to theft or trespassing. Having already invested roughly 10 lakh rupees into the ambitious project, protecting his capital and livestock became his absolute top priority. To ensure round-the-clock safety, he designed a comprehensive digital surveillance grid comprising 16 CCTV cameras. Currently, five cameras have been successfully installed at strategic points across the property. He has already purchased the remaining 11 cameras and keeps them in storage; they are scheduled to go live as soon as the upcoming shrimp and poultry farming units become fully operational.
Five Businesses on a Single Plot
Prasad's grand vision goes far beyond a simple pond; he is actively building what he calls an integrated modern farm. His master plan involves running five distinct types of commercial operations simultaneously on his compact parcel of land, which measures slightly less than an acre and a half. This diversified business model includes rearing fish and shrimp, alongside raising goats, cows, poultry, and quail. He argues that dedicating a piece of land to a single traditional crop yields only one stream of income, leaving farmers financially vulnerable. By transforming his plot into a multiple-income generator, he expects to reap profits from five different directions, significantly reducing his risk while maximizing his overall returns.
A Message for Fellow Farmers
Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, Prasad explains that his ultimate goal was never just to breed fish, but to build a unique rural industry that stands out from the rest. He firmly believes that following the crowd and sticking to conventional methods strictly limits a person's potential earnings and identity. In his view, taking calculated risks and doing things differently is the only way to achieve distinct recognition and higher financial rewards. He strongly appeals to his fellow farmers to think outside the box, regardless of the specific sector they choose to work in. According to him, adopting an unconventional approach is the true secret to earning both wealth and widespread fame in today's competitive agricultural landscape.
