By pairing scientific grafting methods with natural farming principles, she aims to maximize crop yield while significantly reducing labor and maintenance costs.
The Science of Grafting: Eggplant Roots with Tomato Shoots
Kunti Devi initially relied solely on conventional vegetable farming techniques. Her approach shifted after attending a specialized agricultural training program where she learned about the potential of plant grafting. In this process, the resilient root system of an eggplant plant is fused with the upper shoot of a tomato plant. Eggplant roots possess superior disease resistance and soil adaptability, which provides strong foundational support to the tomato crop and enhances overall plant vigor.
Cultivating 150 Grafted Saplings
Putting her training into action, Kunti Devi planted approximately 150 grafted tomato saplings in her field as an initial venture. It has been about one month since these saplings were transplanted, and the crop is currently displaying robust growth. Fruiting is expected to begin shortly. According to the farmer, grafting minimizes the intense routine maintenance usually required for tomato crops, paving the way for better output and enhanced farm income.
Combining Organic Manure and Plastic Mulching
Alongside grafting, Kunti Devi emphasizes sustainable organic practices by replacing synthetic chemicals with natural bio-fertilizers. She has also implemented soil mulching around the plants. Mulching plays a critical role in preventing unwanted weed propagation, retaining essential soil moisture, and guarding against soil erosion. This protective cover substantially lowers the daily manual labor needed to maintain the field.

Through her willingness to adopt modern training and sustainable agricultural methods, Kunti Devi is setting a strong example in her community.
