Domendra Prasad Pandey from Jagdalpur has presented a compelling model of self-reliance in the dairy sector. Having launched his dairy business with just a single cow, Pandey has built a herd of 12 cattle over time. Driven by the consistent local demand for milk and disciplined animal husbandry, he generates a net monthly profit of Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 after covering all operational costs. His journey highlights how structured livestock care can turn traditional dairy farming into a highly remunerative enterprise.
Herd Economics: Breeds, Milk Yield, and Pricing Structure
Pandey's dairy enterprise primarily houses Jersey and Gir cow breeds, which command market prices ranging between Rs 60,000 and Rs 1,00,000 per head. Out of his total stock of 12 cows, 3 are currently in their lactation cycle. Each milking cow yields approximately 14 liters of milk daily. With the prevailing market rate standing at Rs 60 per liter, this output yields daily revenue that easily absorbs feed and maintenance overheads, leaving him with a sustained monthly profit between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000.
Nutritional Strategy and Vigilant Healthcare Management
Maintaining high milk production relies heavily on dietary discipline and disease control. Pandey feeds his cattle a tailored mix of wheat bran (chokar), calcium supplements, paddy straw (para), and green fodder like Napier grass. He emphasizes that Napier grass plays a vital role in preserving cattle health while significantly enhancing their reproductive capacity. Furthermore, to combat prevalent cattle afflictions such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and sudden fevers, he maintains constant surveillance over bodily temperatures to ensure timely veterinary care and preventive intervention.
Practical Advice for Aspiring Dairy Entrepreneurs
Based on his field experience, Domendra Prasad Pandey advises prospective dairy business owners to prioritize cattle wellness and nutrition over mere herd expansion. He notes that systematic daily management, regular health check-ups, and a balanced diet schedule form the foundational pillars of profitability in the dairy industry, allowing small-scale operators to build a successful and sustainable agribusiness.
