The desire to learn often survives even when formal education is interrupted at an early stage. This is the inspiring journey of Bushra, a resident of Kottakkal in Kerala's Malappuram district, whose schooling was cut short back when she was only in LKG. Family difficulties forced her out of the classroom prematurely, yet her passion for reading and writing remained intact. Today, at twenty-two years of age, she is working to fulfill that unfulfilled ambition by preparing for the Class 10 equivalency examination through a local literacy program. Notably, she is the youngest equivalency learner associated with the district literacy mission.
Resuming Education After Years Away
Early childhood did not offer a smooth academic path for Bushra due to difficult domestic circumstances. However, a turning point arrived in 2018 when she received a chance to restart her education through a non-formal learning program run by the literacy mission. She successfully cleared her fourth-grade equivalency test with strong marks at the age of seventeen. Following that milestone, she continued her progress by completing the seventh-grade equivalency course as well. Now, she has set her sights on a much larger educational goal.
Returning to the Classroom Environment
Bushra is currently spending her days studying for the upcoming Class 10 board examinations at the equivalency study center located inside the Kottappadi Government Boys Higher Secondary School. The very classrooms that she had to depart from during her early childhood are now witnessing her determined comeback. For her, this milestone represents much more than a standard qualification test. It serves as an earnest attempt to reclaim the childhood learning opportunities that adverse circumstances had taken away. Speaking about her journey, she notes that it is a chance to win back the opportunity to learn that situations snatched away in childhood.
Family Support Through Hardship
Bushra is the only child of her parents, the late A. Shihabuddin and Sulaikha. Following the passing of her father, the responsibility of running the household fell entirely on her mother. To support the family and keep her daughter's educational aspirations alive, her mother took up a job at a supermarket and provided unwavering backing. This maternal support went far beyond financial assistance, acting as a constant source of moral encouragement for Bushra.
Recognition and Broader Message
District authorities have acknowledged Bushra's remarkable dedication through the literacy mission. During a gathering held at the study center, district literacy mission coordinator P.V. Sasta Prasad honored her by presenting a traditional shawl. Her story demonstrates that age is never a barrier when it comes to acquiring knowledge. With an active desire to learn, an individual can return to books at any juncture in life. The educational path that stalled at the LKG level has now reached the doorstep of the tenth grade, marking a triumph of perseverance.
