Somen Debnath, a native of the Sundarbans region in West Bengal, has arrived in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, as part of his ongoing nationwide cycling campaign after successfully traversing 191 countries across all seven continents over a span of two decades. During his stopover in Hamirpur on Friday, Debnath called upon Additional District Magistrate (ADC) Abhishek Garg and Superintendent of Police (SP) Balbir Singh Thakur. In his interaction with the administration, he shared extraordinary accounts of his long journey, recounting extreme survival situations, hostile environments, and the core philosophy behind his worldwide expedition.
A Two-Decade Global Cycling Tour Spanning 2 Lakh Kilometers
Somen Debnath initiated his monumental world tour on 27 May 2004 at the young age of 23. Over the course of nearly 20 years, he navigated through 191 nations spanning all seven continents of the globe, covering an astonishing cumulative distance of approximately 200,000 kilometers on his bicycle. Reflecting on his journey, Debnath emphasized that his expedition was never intended merely as a sightseeing endeavor or a record-seeking feat. Instead, it served as a broad movement dedicated to raising social awareness, rendering human service, promoting environmental conservation, educating communities on health issues, and spreading the message of Indian culture, harmony, and peace internationally.
Surviving Taliban Captivity, ULFA Hostage Crisis, Tsunami, and Antarctica
Throughout his 20-year journey, Debnath encountered numerous life-threatening perils across different geographies. In 2006, while traveling through Assam, he was taken hostage for five days by ULFA militants. The following year, in 2007, as he journeyed from Kabul to Herat in Afghanistan, Taliban fighters mistook him for an intelligence operative and held him captive for 24 days. His journey also coincided with major natural disasters and extreme climates: he witnessed the catastrophic aftermath of the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka at close quarters, cycled across the freezing ice caps of Antarctica, and contracted COVID-19 while traveling through China in 2020.
Humble Origins, Academic Pursuits, and Foreign Ministry Support
Recalling his early years, Debnath shared that despite severe financial constraints, his father bought him a bicycle during his childhood, a gesture that permanently shaped his life's trajectory. He pursued higher education, earning graduate degrees in both Zoology and Fine Arts. Following his studies, he began conducting awareness lectures in schools on HIV/AIDS prevention. It was during these interactive educational sessions that his ambition to travel the globe and project India's cultural heritage on an international platform crystallized. Upon reaching Delhi in 2004, he met then Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Recognizing Debnath's determination, Pranab Mukherjee encouraged his initiative and extended official support to facilitate his passport, visas, and other international travel logistics.
The 'Reunion Bharat' Nationwide Campaign and Upcoming Memoir
To document his vast experiences across diverse cultures, Debnath is currently authoring a book titled 'The World Biking Odyssey: 191 Countries'. Alongside his writing, he has embarked on a fresh nationwide campaign titled 'Reunion Bharat: One Tree, One Life, Indian Youth and Sports'. Scheduled to run from 27 May 2026 to 27 May 2027, this year-long bicycle tour takes him across all states of India. The campaign focuses on promoting national unity, environmental protection, youth empowerment, and sports engagement. Debnath noted that this domestic tour also gives him a firsthand view of how India has transformed over the past 22 years and allowed him to observe modern India's socio-economic landscape.
Recognition and Honor by Hamirpur District Police
Acknowledging his remarkable perseverance and global goodwill efforts, Hamirpur SP Balbir Singh Thakur presented Somen Debnath with an official certificate of appreciation during his visit. SP Balbir Singh Thakur remarked that the young traveler has performed an exceptional service by carrying Indian culture to far-flung corners of the world. He added that Debnath's interactions with prominent global personalities and leaders during his travels reflect immense pride for the nation.
