An 82-year-old Australian cyclist, Bob Montgomery, accomplished an extraordinary feat of endurance by completing a 5,200-kilometer charity journey, only to pass away peacefully just a day after reaching his destination. During this final expedition, Montgomery successfully raised over 1.04 lakh Australian dollars (104,000 AUD) aimed at supporting individuals battling Motor Neurone Disease. As noted in financial conversions, this amount equals approximately 65 lakh crore Indian rupees. The ride also targeted raising around one lakh US dollars. Montgomery's dedication to this cause stemmed from a deeply personal tragedy when a relative died from the same neurological condition twelve years ago. Following that loss, he made it his life's mission to combat the illness, undertaking six major charity cycling trips across the past 12 years.
Over the course of his decade-long efforts, Montgomery accumulated nearly 3 lakh Australian dollars in total donations for the cause. Confirming his passing, Liam O'Meara, Chief Executive Officer of Motor Neurone Disease New South Wales, shared that Montgomery became suddenly unwell on Monday while traveling home from a celebratory event. O'Meara paid tribute to Montgomery, noting that his sustained fundraising campaigns provided critical medical equipment, treatments, and direct assistance to numerous patients in need.
'One Last Ride' and Final Emotional Tributes
Montgomery had symbolically titled his latest cycling venture 'One Last Ride', a moniker that has now taken on a poignant emotional resonance following his sudden demise. His family confirmed that while his passing was unexpected, it was entirely peaceful. Even in the final hours preceding the completion of his trek, Montgomery remained actively engaged with supporters, explaining the goals of his mission and spreading awareness about the disease.
