Netflix subscribers who share one account across a household are hitting a new requirement: every profile now needs its own, unique email address attached to it. The rule arrives years after Netflix ended free password sharing altogether, a move that pushed users toward signing up for individual accounts, paying to add an extra member to someone else's plan, or hunting for workarounds just to keep streaming without paying twice.
Why Netflix Says It Needs Your Email
On-screen prompts that Netflix has been showing to affected users frame the change as a convenience upgrade. A unique email per profile, the company says, makes signing in and recovering a locked account simpler, and it also lets Netflix tailor recommendations more precisely to each individual watching. But the framing hasn't satisfied everyone. Several users have pointed out that collecting a separate email for every profile also hands Netflix more personal data, data that can then be shared with marketers and advertisers looking to target streaming audiences.
It's Not As Disruptive As It Sounds
For most households, the change turns out to be less painful than it first appears. Netflix's own support page confirms that once you're signed in, you can still jump between every profile on the account regardless of which one you originally logged in with, so nobody is being forced to log out and back in using a profile-specific email just to switch who's watching. If every profile already belongs to a different real person in the house, attaching a unique email to each one is a fairly simple, one-time task. Kids profiles are excluded entirely from the rule, since children cannot sign into Netflix directly on their own.
The Real Headache: Multiple Profiles, One Person
The requirement gets trickier for individual users who deliberately run several profiles on their own account just to keep separate viewing algorithms, one profile tuned to one kind of content, another to something else entirely. Each of those profiles now needs its own distinct email address. Anyone who already juggles several personal email accounts can simply assign one to each profile. For everyone else, Gmail's plus addressing trick offers a free shortcut: appending a tag after the username, such as username+netflix1@gmail.com or username+netflix2@gmail.com, creates valid, distinct-looking addresses without ever opening a new inbox. Proton, Apple, and Outlook all offer similar alias systems that let a set number of extra addresses funnel back into one primary account.
How to Actually Add the Emails
Users who get prompted directly can simply follow Netflix's onscreen instructions to attach an email to each profile. The setting can also be reached manually on a web browser by going to Account, then Profiles, selecting the relevant profile, and opening Contact Info. Some Reddit users have claimed a temporary bypass exists too, turning wifi off and back on right as the app opens has, in their reports, made the prompt disappear, at least for a while. That loophole may not hold up for long, though, since Netflix made the new email rule permanent starting June 15.
What Account Sharing Still Costs
Beyond the email requirement, Netflix continues to make it difficult to keep friends or family who live elsewhere on a single account. Standard plan holders can add one extra member for $7.99 a month with ads, while Premium plan holders can add up to two extra members for $9.99 each without ads, still cheaper than paying for a whole separate subscription. The primary account holder can also generate a temporary verification code to let someone using a device outside the home get access, but that device still has to connect to the home network at least once every month to keep working.
