Sharing short-form video content with friends and family is set to become significantly faster for WhatsApp users. The instant messaging platform is testing a streamlined integration that embeds Instagram Reels directly into the chat interface. Instead of browsing through generic media selectors or navigating back and forth across different apps, users will soon be able to pull up their video interactions directly from the chat attachment options. The feature is presently rolling out to select participants enrolled in the Android beta programme.
Dedicated Shortcut in the Chat Attachment Tray
Under the functionality being developed, tapping the standard attachment icon within any chat window reveals a dedicated Instagram Reels button alongside familiar sharing tools. Selecting this option opens an interface synced directly with the user's Instagram account activity, neatly divided into three distinct browsing sections: recently watched reels, saved clips, and liked videos. Users can scroll through these categories, select their preferred clip, and transmit it directly into the active conversation. This workflow eliminates the need to manually search for previously viewed content or rely on clipboard links.
Meta Accounts Centre Linkage Required
Taking advantage of this integrated sharing shortcut requires users to connect their WhatsApp and Instagram profiles via the Meta Accounts Centre. This secure profile bridge enables WhatsApp to fetch and display the user's personal video interactions in real time. For individuals who prefer keeping their social networking activities strictly separated, linking remains completely optional. Those who choose not to merge their account profiles can continue using both platforms independently as usual, though the dedicated Reels shortcut will not appear in their WhatsApp attachment tray.
Streamlining the Existing Sharing Experience
Users already possess several methods to exchange Facebook and Instagram content, including Reels and Stories, on WhatsApp. However, the prevailing workflow typically requires opening device storage through the media picker, sharing directly from external applications, or copying web URLs. The newly tested attachment button consolidates this entire sequence into a seamless in-chat action. By offering direct access to indexed watch history and saved collections, the platform removes friction and simplifies digital content sharing.
Rollout Timeline and Platform Availability
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta build 2.26.42.9 for Android, distributed through the Google Play Store. Because deployment is progressing in gradual server-side phases, the shortcut may remain hidden even for some users running this specific beta release. Meta has not yet announced a definitive release date for the broader Android public rollout. Furthermore, availability details regarding an upcoming release for iPhone users on iOS have not been disclosed.
