WhatsApp users in India can now check and pay everyday bills such as electricity, water, gas and FASTag without ever leaving the chat app. The feature, called Bill Payments, went live in India on September 2, 2026.
Built on the Bharat Connect network
The entire system runs on the Bharat Connect network, also known as BBPS. That gives users direct access to 22,722 billers spread across 30 different categories. People will be able to see both bills they have already paid and ones that are due, all inside the same screen. Anyone managing multiple electricity, water or gas connections at home, or handling bills for different family members, can keep everything in one place. Users get to choose whichever payment method suits them. The rollout is happening gradually across India, and the feature is expected to reach all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
Tapping the ₹ icon starts the process
Using Bill Payments has been kept fairly simple. The first step is tapping the ₹ icon that appears at the top of WhatsApp's home screen. From there, a user selects the bill category, say electricity or water, and then picks the specific biller. The next step is entering account details such as the account number. Once that information is in, WhatsApp automatically pulls up the bill amount and other relevant details, so there is no need to check a separate app or website first. Payment can then be completed using UPI, a debit card or a credit card, whichever the user prefers.
Previously paid billers now appear in Payments Home
Any biller a user has already paid through WhatsApp will show up automatically in the Payments Home section. That makes paying the same bill the next time noticeably quicker, since the account details do not need to be entered again. Bills for a home, an office or different family members can also be tracked and managed from one place, cutting down the need to jump between multiple apps or websites.
From electricity to loan repayments, what all is covered
The new feature covers services including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments. The categories used most often show up automatically on Payments Home so users do not have to search for them each time. The remaining categories are available under a "See All" option, which lists the complete set of 30 categories.
Recharges and metro tickets were already available
WhatsApp already offers several citizen services, including mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings and access to government chatbots. With Bill Payments now added, several everyday essential tasks can be handled from a single app. According to the company, the goal behind the feature is to make paying a bill as simple as sending a message on WhatsApp. The rollout is being carried out in phases across India, and the feature is likely to reach all Android and iOS users in the country soon.
