The comprehensive transformation of Secunderabad Railway Station into a world-class, modern transportation hub is progressing at a rapid pace in Telangana. Out of the total project budget of 714.73 crore rupees, approximately 65 percent of the construction work has already been completed. Executed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this major infrastructure initiative aims to establish a state-of-the-art gateway for the state, enhancing travel comfort, safety, and convenience for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters.
Why the Upgradation Was Necessary for 1.5 Lakh Daily Passengers
Secunderabad Railway Station ranks among the busiest railway terminals in India. According to operational figures, nearly 180 trains pass through the station daily, catering to an average passenger footfall of around 1.5 lakh people every day. Given this immense traffic volume, upgrading the existing station infrastructure had become essential to eliminate congestion, streamline passenger movement, and deliver a hassle-free transit experience for travelers.
Key Amenities: 26 Lifts, 32 Escalators, and Green Energy Features
The redevelopment plan incorporates a wide range of modern passenger amenities. A prominent feature is the construction of a spacious two-story air concourse designed to accommodate waiting passengers comfortably. Additionally, a full roof structure is being installed over the platforms to protect passengers from weather elements. To facilitate seamless movement across levels, the station will feature 26 lifts and 32 escalators. The project also integrates multi-level vehicle parking facilities, solar power generation systems, electric vehicle charging stations, advanced security systems, and upgraded passenger lounges.
Completed Infrastructure Works on the South Side and RPF Building
Several key components of the redevelopment project have already been completed successfully. Passengers are currently utilizing a new temporary booking office, while the construction of a dedicated building for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has been finished. Additionally, the foot overbridge heading toward the Kazipet side is fully operational. Other completed works include the south-side station building, the south arrival area, the basement structural framework, and the south-side approach road.
Ongoing Work on North Building, Skywalk, and Sewage Plant
Construction efforts are currently focused on the northern section of the station and major utility infrastructure. Progress is underway on the north multi-level parking structure and the north main station building. The structural framework for the air concourse, platform roof sheds, the foot overbridge toward the Hyderabad side, and travelator-integrated foot overbridges are actively being erected. Essential utility projects, including underground water storage tanks, a sewage treatment plant, and a direct skywalk link to the nearby metro station, are also advancing rapidly.
Enhancing Multi-Modal Connectivity for Seamless Travel
The overarching goal of the redevelopment project is to revolutionize the overall commuting experience. The direct skywalk connecting the railway station to the metro network will allow passengers to transition between rail and urban transit systems without stepping onto busy street traffic. By seamlessly integrating multiple modes of transport, Secunderabad Railway Station is set to serve as a benchmark for modern urban infrastructure and intercity transit hubs.
