British tennis player Sonay Kartal continued her strong return from a long-term injury layoff by defeating world number 48 Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets to advance to the second round of the Wuhan Open. Ranked 170th in the world, Kartal produced a composed performance to dispatch her Ukrainian opponent 7-5 6-3 in a contest that lasted an hour and 31 minutes. The victory sends the British number five through to the last-32 stage of the prestigious tournament.
Dominant Serving Decides Opening Rounds
From the opening games, Kartal demonstrated exceptional control on her serve, putting immediate pressure on Kalinina. The first set demanded resilience from both competitors, but Kartal managed the decisive breakthrough to claim the set 7-5. A significant factor in the 24-year-old's victory was her effectiveness on serve throughout the encounter. She struck four aces and converted 23 of 30 points whenever she landed her first delivery, preventing Kalinina from finding rhythm in return games.
Securing Victory on Third Match Point
Despite being on the back foot in the second set, Kalinina mounted a determined stand as the finish line approached. The Ukrainian world number 48 successfully saved two match points to prolong the contest. However, Kartal maintained her composure and converted her opportunity at the third time of asking, closing out the set 6-3 and sealing a dominant straight-sets triumph.
Comeback Path Following Stress Fracture
Kartal's recent results mark a significant resurgence after spending six months on the sidelines due to a stress fracture in her back. The extended absence saw her world ranking slip to 170th. She initiated her competitive comeback last month representing Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup team event, where she delivered a narrow, hard-fought performance in a loss against Czech player Marie Bouzkova, who was ranked 26th in the world at the time.
Building on that foundation, Kartal entered her first WTA tournament in half a year at the Beijing Open earlier this month. In Beijing, she secured consecutive victories against Spain's Andrea Lazaro Garcia and local favourite Wang Xinyu to advance to the third round, before her run was eventually halted by Armenia's Alina Charaeva. Her latest triumph in Wuhan confirms that her physical recovery and match sharpness remain on an upward trajectory.
Upcoming Test Against Belinda Bencic
Kartal will now turn her attention to the second round in Wuhan, where she is scheduled to face Swiss ninth seed Belinda Bencic. Confronting a seeded opponent represents another major test for the Briton as she seeks to climb back up the world rankings and build on her run of form against top-50 opposition.
Fatigue Forces Zheng Qinwen Withdrawal
Elsewhere at the tournament, recently crowned China Open champion Zheng Qinwen announced she would not compete in Wuhan. In an official statement, Zheng explained that her body was experiencing severe fatigue following an intense schedule of matches. Zheng had undergone elbow surgery last year and spent the subsequent 12 months managing fitness and form concerns, before staging an impressive resurgence in Beijing that culminated in a victory over Mirra Andreeva to capture the title.
