Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka concluded his remarkable professional tennis career with a first-round defeat at the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland. The 41-year-old athlete was defeated by eighth-seeded Jiri Leheka with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (2) in what turned out to be his final competitive appearance. His career as a professional player officially began in back in 2002, and he had announced in December of last year that 2026 would mark his final year on the tour.
Reflecting on a Storied Career
Before stepping onto the court for his final match, Stan Wawrinka shared with the ATP Tour website that his only goal throughout his career was to give his absolute best so that he would carry no regrets, believing it was the best way to walk away from the sport. The final shot of his professional journey was a backhand that sailed wide of the target, leaving the spectators visibly disappointed as they witnessed the end of an era.
Conquering World Number Ones
Among the defining achievements of his career, all three of his Grand Slam singles titles were secured by defeating the reigning world number one player in the final. He triumphed over Rafael Nadal at the 2014 Australian Open, and subsequently defeated Novak Djokovic in the finals of the French Open in 2015 and the US Open the following year.
Olympic Glory and Davis Cup Success
Reaching a career-high singles ranking of world number three in 2014, Stan Wawrinka accumulated a total of 16 tour-level singles titles during his career. Beyond his individual success, he teamed up with Roger Federer to capture the men's doubles gold medal for Switzerland at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and played a pivotal role in helping Switzerland secure its first-ever Davis Cup title in 2014.
