However, wildlife biology experts emphasize that internet popularity and human curiosity could ultimately pose serious hazards to the animal's long term survival in an urban environment. While fans celebrate his unusual gait and resilient spirit, scientists point out the stark realities facing wild urban fauna, where physical limitations, environmental hazards, and human disruption constantly test lifespan expectations.

Jimothy rapidly became a digital sensation after short video clips showcasing his unique movement accumulated millions of views across online platforms within days. The viral surge triggered widespread fan creations, custom artwork, and plush toys dedicated to the animal. Local civic leaders went so far as to declare a Jimothy Summer throughout the region. In addition, the Seattle Mariners baseball organization organized a dedicated Jimothy Night at T-Mobile Park, offering special Jimothy T-shirts to attending ticket holders.
The backstory of the famous raccoon expanded further when Seattle resident Ben Trammell shared footage recorded a year prior in his backyard. The video documented Jimothy as a young kit alongside his mother and littermates. A far greater immediate risk stems from human interference driven by social media content creators. Influencer actions, such as staging artificial animal rescues, forcing close-up photographs, or attempting illegal pet domestication, severely jeopardize wild animals. Biologists agree that Jimothy's widespread fame currently represents the single largest threat to his well-being. Castillo-Vardaro explained that urban raccoons occupy small home territories. Large crowds of fans seeking to track and film Jimothy create severe stress and disruption. If forced to abandon his familiar territory, Jimothy could face heightened risks of traffic accidents, pet conflicts, disease exposure, and unhealthy reliance on human food sources.
