Tripura police have thwarted an illegal arms delivery in the capital city of Agartala by intercepting two out of state youths and seizing three sophisticated pistols alongside 50 rounds of ammunition. The apprehension took place at Bhutani Market within the busy Battala area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the West Agartala police station. The action was mounted following specific intelligence inputs indicating an imminent weapons handover inside the commercial hub.
Tactical Operation at Bhutani Market
Acting on actionable intelligence regarding an illegal firearm transaction, law enforcement officers quickly cordoned off the market surroundings. Sadar Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Panna Lal Sen explained that a tactical trap was laid at the scene to intercept the individuals during the exchange. When the two suspects gathered at the designated market location to deliver the consignment of firearms and ammunition, personnel moved in swiftly and detained them on the spot.
Formal Arrest Under Arms Smuggling Charges
Following their initial detention and the discovery of the cache, both individuals were placed under formal arrest on charges related to arms smuggling. Speaking to the press, Sen stated that their identities are currently being withheld to protect ongoing investigative operations. Preliminary findings indicate that the duo had traveled into Tripura by train on Wednesday itself, getting apprehended on the very day of their arrival in the state capital.
Suspected Interstate Links Under Scrutiny
Investigators strongly suspect that an organised interstate network is orchestrating the illicit flow of arms into the region. Police are conducting detailed interrogations to determine the intended local recipients of the three pistols and ammunition, as well as the broader operational network backing the racket. The interception coincides with tightened security measures deployed across the state in the run-up to the civic elections scheduled for November 27.
