A violent face-off broke out between local residents and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ashabari in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Monday, leaving three security personnel and multiple villagers injured. The confrontation erupted following serious accusations that border personnel had physically assaulted a local resident earlier in the day.
Detention of Local Youth Triggers Road Blockade
The sequence of events began around 10 am near Natun Bazar, close to the Ashabari Gram Panchayat. According to local accounts, BSF personnel detained Hefzur Rahman, son of Shahajan Miah, while he was engaged in clearing vegetation in the area. Villagers alleged that Rahman was subjected to physical violence during his detention, sustaining a fractured leg as a result. Outraged by the alleged assault, local residents took to the streets and blocked the Ashabari-Rahimpur road near Natun Bazar, demanding immediate accountability and punitive action against the personnel responsible.
Convoy Vehicle Ambushed During Protest
The situation escalated sharply during the road blockade when a four-wheeler belonging to the BSF's 49th Battalion, registered under TR-01-AL-1051, encountered the gathering while travelling from Rahimpur toward Boxanagar. The vehicle was carrying Company Commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar, and another BSF jawan named Manjit. Protesters armed with sticks and bamboo sticks attacked the occupants of the four-wheeler, leaving all three security personnel injured. The precise sequence of triggers that prompted the physical attack on the vehicle remains unclarified.
Police Intervention and Medical Evacuation
Following the outbreak of violence, reinforcements from the Ashabari BSF Border Outpost along with police officers from Kalamchoura police station rushed to the scene to restore public order. The three injured jawans were initially shifted to Boxanagar Hospital before medical staff referred them to Hapania Hospital for specialized medical attention. Several protesting villagers also sustained injuries during the physical clashes. Both sides have subsequently lodged formal police complaints at Kalamchoura police station, while senior BSF officials inspected the site to assess the security situation.
