In a shocking development that has sent ripples through the Indian television industry, prominent actor Rohit Chandel has been taken into custody by the Mumbai Police. The arrest follows serious allegations of stalking and harassment involving a 16-year-old girl. This sudden legal action has placed the young television star under intense scrutiny, catching his vast fanbase and industry colleagues completely off guard.
Legal Action Initiated Under the POCSO Act
The legal proceedings began when the victim's family visited the Oshiwara police station in Mumbai to lodge a formal complaint against Rohit Chandel. Considering the sensitive nature of the case and the age of the victim, senior police officials directed immediate action. The actor is now facing multiple charges under the recently implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which strictly penalises the sexual harassment of a minor. The police are systematically building a timeline of the alleged harassment as their investigation continues.
From Instagram Friendship to Alleged Harassment
The police revealed that the initial interaction between Rohit Chandel and the teenage girl started online. Like many modern digital connections, they started talking over the popular platform Instagram. The victim initially agreed to be friends, but things escalated when Chandel reportedly began tracking her movements and persistently trying to pursue her. The complaint states that when the minor girl noticed this intrusive behavior and tried to cut all ties, her attempts to push him away resulted in further stalking and unwanted pressure. Distressed by the situation, her family finally decided to take legal recourse.
Court Grants Police Custody Until July 13
Following his arrest, the Oshiwara police produced Rohit Chandel before a local magistrate court in Mumbai. During the court proceedings, the investigating agency requested physical custody of the actor, emphasizing the necessity of interrogating him thoroughly to uncover the exact sequence of events. After evaluating the arguments presented by both sides, the court remanded Chandel to police custody until July 13. Investigators are expected to scrutinise the actor's mobile phone records and social media interactions to verify the allegations and collect digital evidence.
A Major Setback for a Rising Television Career
This incident marks a massive blow to Chandel's flourishing career. He rose to household fame with his portrayal of the lead character Dhaval Makwana in Star Plus's hit daily drama Pandya Store. His performance had turned him into a popular prime-time star. He also had a notable role in the acclaimed web series Escaype Live, which explored the virtual world. The emergence of these severe allegations has now cast a dark shadow over his promising acting career. As of now, neither the actor nor his official representatives have issued any statement or reaction regarding the allegations.
