A tragic accident struck a festive gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district on Wednesday when a balcony railing collapsed onto a crowd of worshippers. Devotees had gathered inside the courtyard of Punjabi Dharamshala under the City Kotwali police station limits to take part in the Ganesh festival celebrations. The sudden structure collapse resulted in the deaths of two women devotees and left around 30 to 35 people injured. The catastrophic failure sparked chaos and a frantic rush to safety across the festive compound.
Midday Aarti Preparations Interrupted by Disaster
Organizers at Punjabi Dharamshala had consecrated a roughly one and a half foot tall Ganesh idol in the courtyard for the festive celebrations. On Wednesday afternoon, worshippers arrived in significant numbers to perform their daily rituals and attend the midday prayers. Around 12:30 PM, as preparations for the ceremonial Mangal Aarti were nearing completion, a large turnout of men and women gathered in the courtyard beneath the upper floors. Without warning, structural elements from the upper tier separated and plummeted directly into the congested congregation below.
Rainwater Accumulation on Tarpaulin Triggered Failure
The collapse was triggered by accumulated rainwater combined with poor structural support during heavy downpours. To protect the gathering from inclement weather, organizers had secured large waterproof tarpaulins to the building's third-floor railing and overhang. As heavy rainfall began during the prayer session, massive amounts of water pooled directly across the suspended canopy. The sheer gravitational load of the collected rainwater exerted tremendous tension on the third-floor railing, causing it to snap loose and pull the entire structure down onto the crowd below.
Immediate Rescue Efforts and Fatalities Confirmed
Residents living in the vicinity of Punjabi Dharamshala rushed inside immediately after hearing the crash and screams of trapped devotees. Neighborhood volunteers launched a swift rescue operation, clearing away fallen concrete and debris to pull out trapped individuals before transporting them directly to the district hospital. Medical personnel at the hospital declared 60-year-old Uma Kapoor dead upon arrival. Several critically injured victims were subsequently referred to advanced medical facilities in Lucknow, where a second female devotee, identified as Niti Mehrotra, succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Senior Administration Inspects Site and Initiates Probe
The tragedy prompted a swift administrative response across Sitapur. District Magistrate Raja Ganapathy R, Superintendent of Police Ankur Agarwal, and Additional District Magistrate Ayush Chaudhary visited both the disaster site and the district hospital to monitor emergency operations. Speaking on the situation, District Magistrate Raja Ganapathy R stated that eight individuals sustained critical injuries, with one patient in extremely serious condition sent to Lucknow for advanced care. Law enforcement and civic authorities have initiated an investigation to evaluate the exact structural failure and logistical oversight that led to the collapse.
