Widespread commotion broke out in the Naini area under the Yamunanagar zone of Prayagraj during a Run for Unity marathon organized to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The event, organized by the local Bharatiya Janata Party Yamunapar unit, turned volatile when registered participants accused organizers of starting the race without formal flag-off procedures or clear regulatory guidelines. Protests also erupted over allegations of cheating, including claims that certain runners bypassed rules using motorbikes.
Vehicle Blockades and Property Damage at the Venue
Agitated participants surrounded official transport belonging to the organizers and local police deployed at the site. The unrest quickly escalated as dozens of plastic chairs arranged for guests were smashed and thrown across the ground. Groups of runners climbed onto the main stage to shout slogans against the chaotic arrangements. In the ensuing scramble, participants began grabbing and snatching participation certificates from distribution desks, triggering intense disarray across the venue. A local political leader was also chased by frustrated attendees before being escorted to safety.
Crowd Surges Past Expected Logistics
Turnout heavily overwhelmed the logistical preparations, with an estimated five to six thousand people gathering for the morning race. The massive influx quickly spiraled beyond the capacity of on-ground arrangements. To restore order and disperse the crowd, police personnel stepped in and pushed back the agitated runners. Security teams subsequently brought the premises under control after clearing the main stage and parking perimeter.
