A friendship that began on social media in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district ended in bloodshed after it turned into a romantic relationship. When the girl's brother objected to the relationship, her boyfriend allegedly picked up a spade and attacked him, leaving the teenager badly injured and lying in a pool of blood. Villagers rushed him to hospital and overpowered the accused before handing him over to the police. With his condition turning critical, doctors referred the injured boy from Deoria Medical College to Gorakhpur, while police are now investigating every angle of the case.
Instagram friendship that turned into romance
The incident took place in a village under the Rampur Karkhana police station area of Deoria district, a largely rural pocket of eastern Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal belt. According to the account emerging from the village, a young man from neighbouring Azamgarh district had first come in contact with a girl from this village through the social media platform Instagram. What began as casual online conversation gradually developed into a romantic relationship over time. The young man then started visiting the girl's village periodically to meet her, a routine that continued for a while without any major confrontation. A few days ago, the girl had suddenly switched off her mobile phone, though the reason for this remains unclear. It was during this very period that her boyfriend showed up directly at her house, catching the family off guard and causing an uproar within the household.
Brother's objection triggers spade attack
When the girl's brother saw the young man at their home, he strongly objected to the relationship and to him showing up uninvited without any prior notice. The objection allegedly sparked a heated argument between the two, which quickly escalated to the point where the accused picked up a spade, a common farm tool kept lying nearby. He then allegedly struck the teenager repeatedly on the head and neck, blows serious enough to leave him drenched in blood and collapsed on the ground. Hearing the commotion, villagers from the area rushed to the spot within minutes. They immediately took the injured teenager to a medical college, where doctors, finding his condition critical, referred him onward to the better-equipped Gorakhpur Medical College for specialised treatment. Meanwhile, angry villagers caught hold of the attacker before he could flee the scene and handed him over to the police.
Accused in police custody as probe continues
Police took the accused into custody from the villagers and have begun questioning him about the sequence of events. Officials say that every aspect of the incident is being thoroughly investigated, and further strict action will be taken based on the evidence gathered from the spot. A case has been registered based on the written complaint given by the injured teenager's family, and further legal proceedings are being carried out as per rules. The accused currently remains in police custody, while the injured teenager continues to be treated in Gorakhpur as his family waits anxiously for news of his recovery. The village has remained tense since the incident, with the attack dominating local conversation and raising fresh concern about relationships that begin over social media.
