Truck drivers pulling over to rest along major highways in Uttar Pradesh found themselves targeted by a cunning gang of criminals. Maharajpur police in Kanpur successfully dismantled a mobile phone theft ring that preyed on resting drivers under the cover of night, making off with their valuable communication devices and belongings. Acting swiftly on intelligence, police apprehended four active members of the syndicate. Authorities recovered 12 stolen smartphones, along with a.315 bore illegal firearm and live cartridges, which the gang reportedly used to intimidate victims.
Criminal Backgrounds of the Accused
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Shiva Singh shared details of the operation during a press briefing on Tuesday. According to police statements, several of the detained individuals possess prior criminal records. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in multiple serious offences. Cases including robbery, the Gangsters Act, attempted murder, and violations of the Arms Act are already registered against them across various police jurisdictions.
Police Action Triggered by Informant Tip-Off
The breakthrough came following precise information received by law enforcement. Sub-Inspector Pawan Sharma and his tactical team were conducting routine checks for suspicious vehicles and individuals near the Kulkhalgao underpass on Tuesday when an informant tipped them off. The source reported that four young men who targeted highway truck drivers to steal mobile phones were heading from Ramadevi toward Maharajpur. The tip indicated the suspects intended to sell the stolen devices.
Attempted Escape Foiled by Police Surround
Upon receiving the alert, the police team swiftly established a perimeter in the area. Officers moved along the service road and reached the front of KIT College. Spotting the approaching police presence, the suspects attempted to flee the scene. However, vigilant officers cornered and successfully apprehended all four individuals without incident.
Identities Revealed Following Interrogation
During subsequent questioning, the suspects confessed to targeting drivers of trucks parked along the highway. Police officially identified the arrested individuals as Abhishek सैनी alias Kadddu, a resident of Narwal in Kanpur; Aditya Yadav alias Raftaar from Chakeri; Raghavendra Yadav alias Raghav alias Kallu from Chakeri; and Babu Singh from Chakeri.
Recovered Items and Prior Cases in Kanpur and Fatehpur
Police detailed the specific recoveries and legal history tied to each suspect. Abhishek सैनी alias Kaddu was found with three stolen mobile phones, a.315 bore illegal pistol, and ammunition; he faces roughly half a dozen cases involving robbery, the Gangsters Act, and the Arms Act across Kanpur and Fatehpur. Aditya Yadav alias Raftaar possessed three mobile phones, with prior cases under the Arms Act and attempted murder registered at the Jajmau police station. The third suspect, Raghavendra Yadav alias Raghav alias Kallu, had four smartphones from brands including Oppo, Infinix, Redmi, and Vivo. The fourth suspect, Babu Singh, was found carrying two mobile phones manufactured by Oppo and Motorola.
Legal Proceedings and Return of Devices to Owners
Maharajpur police have formally registered a case against all four accused and initiated procedures to present them before a court of law. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to trace the legitimate owners of the recovered smartphones to ensure the devices are returned to their rightful owners.
