A deceptive operation involving the engraving of counterfeit hallmarking impressions on low-purity gold jewellery has been uncovered in Kanpur's Chowk Sarafa area. Operating within the jurisdiction of the Feelkhana police station, individuals allegedly utilized an advanced laser cutting machine to stamp low-carat ornaments with markings resembling genuine purity certifications. Law enforcement personnel have confiscated the machinery, registered a formal case against the suspects, and initiated a broader investigation.
Discrepancy Detected During Jewellery Appraisal
The operation unraveled when a woman visited a jewellery store in the Feelkhana locality aiming to sell a set of gold ornaments. As part of standard appraisal procedures, the shopkeeper tested the gold for purity and discovered that the actual precious metal content was significantly inferior to standard market grade. Despite this low purity, the items carried visible markings resembling standard hallmarking.
Sensing organized fraud rather than incidental impurity, the jeweller promptly alerted local police authorities. Initial inquiries revealed that an individual identified as Akshay Gupta had supplied these ornaments to the woman, charging her 40,000 rupees in exchange. When investigators traced the transaction chain, deeper details emerged regarding how the pieces were sourced and marked before reaching circulation.
Laser Cutting Setup in Chowk Sarafa
Police investigations pointed directly to a shop owned by Dinesh Verma located inside the Chowk Sarafa market hub. The premises housed a laser cutting machine that was allegedly being utilized to imprint hallmark-style purity seals onto lower-carat pieces. This technique allowed low-purity items to be passed off as high-grade gold, facilitating both retail distribution and the pledging of ornaments for loans.
Hallmarking exists to provide consumers with an authoritative and verifiable assurance of gold content. By fabricating identical-looking marks on inferior alloys, the operation was able to mislead buyers into paying high-purity prices for substandard material, causing direct financial injury to customers. Such practices also compromise commercial integrity and trust across the precious metals retail sector.
Equipment Confiscated as Broader Syndicate Probed
Investigating officers seized the laser cutting equipment suspected of being used to fabricate the unauthorized marks. Following the formal registration of the case, police confirmed that all primary suspects linked to the setup have been identified. Officials are currently examining the precise purity levels of the ornaments seized and analyzing transaction ledgers to ascertain how many jewellery items were stamped and how many individuals fell victim to the scheme before the workshop was shut down.
